The new maps predict how long it would take evacuees to walk to safety from tsunami zones caused by a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake, a high-magnitude tremor that experts predict could occur within the next 300 years and shake much of the Pacific Northwest. The funds come from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. The purpose of the act is to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic, particularly on low-income people and people of color. The apartments are meant for households making 30% to 80% or less of the area median income. The state environmental agency announced on October 19 the award of $3 million in competitive grants to 21 cities and counties across the state to assist with planning efforts for river, lake and marine shorelines. Grays Harbor’s sum amounted to $212,500, including $130,000 for a sea level rise vulnerability assessment and $82,500 for mapping meanders and changes in river channels. Natural disasters and the most severe effects of climate change disproportionately impact communities that are least able to prepare for, and recover from, those harms. To counter this, the Act directed FEMA to take a data-based approach to designate and assist communities that are most at-risk and in-need with respect to natural disasters and climate impacts. Willapa Bay, situated in the county’s coastal “hook”, is home to abundant oyster and cranberry production and boasts one of the most bio-diverse environments in the state. In addition to shellfish processing and cranberry production, Pacific County hosts a modest timber industry and a wastewater treatment plant that has been internationally-recognized for its excellent environmental management, both of which provide employment to Pacific County residents.
