You’re not alone. It’s complex. And it can seem overwhelming. Just figuring out where and who to acknowledge is enough to stump plenty of well-versed historians. It’s also hard to predict real criticisms about these acknowledgements. After all, we must avoid turning land acknowledgement into a box-checking performance that tokenizes Tribes. But there’s good news: focusing on relationality and positionality can transform the process. Hopefully, it will also transform our work with Tribes. BEYOND BOX-CHECKING Land Acknowledgements have become risky business. For starters, we can disrespect many by ignoring key Peoples with ancestral ties to Places. Or worse, showing bias by who we include or exclude. And, sadly, recent criticisms of land acknowledgements show how they often undermine the foundation of good Tribal Relations: Our Authenticity. STARTING POINT: PEOPLE & PLACES We start our research to understand who has a special relationship to a place. First, we identify specific locations related to our work. Second, we identify Tribes and Nations of Peoples with ancestral ties to those locations. Then, we consult with Tribal counterparts about what we found. Typically, the first step is a big one. It seems overwhelming—trying to discover all the historical ties to a location. So, after doing all this, you’ll end up with two really big lists. These become your draft. Congratulations! You’ve taken the first big step in a land acknowledgement. Our next—and most important step: Consulting with Tribal counterparts for feedback. CONSULTATION TRANSFORMATION: THE RELATIONAL DRAFT We need help turning these lists into a meaningful drafted acknowledgement. More important: We must build relationships. We must navigate drafting as a diplomatic effort to expand our understanding and relationships with those Tribes. This diplomacy is where the transformation process begins. We must first identify Tribes we have some existing relationship with. Consider: * What communities are impacted by our work? * What special subjects, activities, and places do these involve? * Who is our organization already working with? * What kind of ‘cultural brain trust’ can we cultivate? * How can we reciprocate their help and input? * How can this become an interactive, listening process—NOT just editing? Some organizations create a working group to involve Tribal counterparts in the process. Relationship. Platform. Action. Awareness. Wherever this journey leads you, it shouldn’t simply end with an edited draft published on a website. Don’t just check a box. Build relationships. Use your platform. Take action. Expand awareness. Your organization should add new relational dimensions to your work with Tribes. These should be rooted in reciprocity, understanding, and authenticity. But what exactly do these fuzzy words mean? That’s a good question. There’s only two places you’ll find the answer: You and your Tribal counterparts. POSITIONALITY & RELATIONALITY The answer will look different for every organization and every Tribal counterpart. It will depend upon special people, places, subjects, and activities involved in your work. It will also depend upon your organization’s positionality—the positional privilege, resources, platforms, and relationships unique to your work and history. Your relationships with Tribes should evolve through this process. You should gain a better understanding of the communities impacted by your work, and likely, by a complex colonial history. The listening, responding, and respect you bring to the dialogue should transform your relationship. It should become more authentic. It should bring actions and commitments that reflect the scale of your organization’s impact, but also its privilege, resources, and platform. More importantly, it should address the feedback you receive from Tribes. RESPONDING BEYOND WORDS So what’s next? Start doing research—whatever scale that looks like. Maybe it’s just you. Maybe it’s an entire committee or working group. Next, reflect on what you learn. Along the way, also reflect on the criticisms out there. What do you see and hear Tribal voices saying about land acknowledgements? How can you respond in your process? Lastly, begin anchoring your work in relationships with Tribes. Listen, absorb, and respond accordingly. With Time, Repetition, and Recursion, you’ll transform your work along this path. The People will tell you. The People will show you.
