We constantly look for ways to deliver greater value to our customers and ways to improve how we deliver that value. One of the ways we do that is by using the Fortive Business Systems (we call it "FBS"), our continuous improvement toolset. As a passionate FBS Champion, here are some nuggets of wisdom that I have gathered while becoming proficient in these tools over the years: * Don't let perfect get in the way of better - Progress is better than perfection, and it will lead you down the path of improvement. If you focus on making things perfect, you may never make any progress. * Swap "can't" with "Yes, if" - Henry Ford once said, "If you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." It's amazing how much your attitude determines your success or failure. So much is possible if you pull in the right resources, keep a positive attitude and work as a team. * There's no HIPPO (Highest Paid Person's Opinion) - When working toward a solution, it's important to encourage everyone to participate in the process. Having no rank among team members ensures better outputs from those closest to the work and creates buy-in, which drives sustainment. * Give everyone the power of "ELMO" (Everyone Let's Move On) - Did I mention we like acronyms? It's easy to fall down a rabbit hole when working through a problem. We allow everyone on the team to recognize when this happens and quite literally throw ELMOs. We also have what we call a "parking lot" for things that we don't want to forget but aren't relevant to the problem at hand. * Have Fun - Nobody wants to be part of a dull initiative. Look for opportunities to have fun. This could mean hosting an energizer activity that gets the team excited to start the day. It's hard to be bored when your colleagues are pretending to be animals. We've really done that. I was there. These are just a few of the principles that have helped us hone our solutions and deliver value for our customers. But you don't have to work for a Fortive operating company to adopt them and adapt them for your purposes.
