Purpose and Focus
Project Focus
Channel stability to support chinook freshwater egg survival
Channel complexity to support rearing habitat
Both aspects benefit HC summer chum and chinook salmon habitat
Preliminary design and permit application materials
Project Focus:
Focus on freshwater habitat importance for HC summer chum and chinook salmon
Habitat complexity considerations
Build on past studies about channel and floodplain conditions
Updated geomorphic and habitat assessment

Designed to emulate natural logjams with objective to
restore the large wood cycle and aquatic and riparian habitat
ELJs have been used to:
•Provide erosion protection for highways, levees, farms, homes
•Capture mobile wood
•Protect boat ramps
•Created forested islands
Engineered Logjams
First developed from research at University of Washington
(Abbe et al. 1996)
Thousands of ELJs have been built all over the world

Project Overview
26
Project Goals:
1.Increase channel length and
sinuosity.
2.Create multi-thread channels.
3.Increase inundation of side
channels and floodplains.
4.Increase wood loading
5.Increase pools count and quality.
6.Decrease channel migration rates.
7.Increase riparian cover.
