As an adult, I learned about different issues and history around the world, some far away, and others very close. When I realized these issues and history were never mentioned in school nor in community conversations, I felt very frustrated. In October, the Multicultural Center hosted a field trip for the OCEAN (Opportunity Community Experience Academics Navigation) Program. OCEAN K-12 Family Partnership Program is an independent study alternative learning experience program for students grade K-12. We started the conversation with a video where children were asked what the word immigrant means to them. I would like to highlight one of the many interesting responses; “My family is Mexican. We didn’t move, the border moved. We are not immigrants; my ancestors have always lived where they live.” We also had two presenters that have different but similar stories occurring at different times in history. First, Joanne Murayama shared her family pictures and quilt that tells the story of her family living in an internment camp during the Second World War. Second, Storya Mamond, a recent immigrant from Afghanistan, read a children’s book about an Afghan family living in camp while the Taliban came to power. As Storya read, she was able to relate and share her own experience and how her family came to Port Townsend. Finally, we read testimonies of children living in camps at the U.S. border. The OCEAN Program students wrote postcards to stakeholders to advocate for support of unaccompanied migrant children who need lawyers when they go to immigration court. "It's never too early to tell our stories." <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/e024fcd3-c9dc-de0c-8b8d-13b4e8997d38.jpeg> Michi Murayama and the award-winning quilt she made of the experience in the Japanese American internment camp. Advocacy: #Let Asylum Seekers Work When people seeking asylum come to the US, there is currently a 180-day mandated waiting period to gain work authorization. Asylum seekers need and want to work, and our economy needs them as businesses buckle under the strain of historic labor shortages. Congress has introduced multiple bipartisan bills to improve access to work authorization for asylum seekers. Members of Congress stand with business leaders, faith leaders, city leaders, and community members throughout the country who all agree: let asylum seekers work. The House Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act (ASWAA, HR 1325) is a practical and needed step forward. Special Volunteer Opportunities JCIRA has a need for some specialized volunteers—and for both of these positions, you can work from home, but still help immigrants in our community. Prefer another way to volunteer? Check out the choices here <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=f7bf7677d5&e=e9fe4694e3> . Do You Have Experience or Interest in Creating Websites? Whether you’ve designed a website, created a blog, or would just like to learn to create one for your small business or Etsy page, here’s an opportunity to help JCIRA while you learn or enhance your skills. We need help with our website, mostly to backup our web administrator, but you can be more involved if you would like. You don’t need HTML because we use a template designed just for non-technical people. If you have experience with a website, blog, or photo-editing program, your skills would be especially valued. It’s an ideal position for someone who wants to volunteer, but needs to do it on their own time. After you’re trained, you can work from home, and you can choose your hours. Want to learn more? Contact Rachel Imper at 360-344-8287 or email rimper3@gmail.com <mailto:rimper3@gmail.com> . Are You Bilingual in Spanish and English? Can You Spare Time for a Short-Term Project? We’re making an effort to make one portion of our website more accessible for Spanish-speaking immigrants, especially for those who need help. This short-term project should go quickly if we can get two or three people to volunteer. You could make a difference for people who are in need of assistance. If you’re interested, contact Rachel Imper at 360-344-8287 or email rimper3@gmail.com <mailto:rimper3@gmail.com> .
