Dear Commissioner Dean,
Happy Veterans Day!
The dawn of our nation brought the hope of democracy to a world of autocrats. Soon, it spread around the globe for it is the only form of "government of the people, by the people, and
for the people." as President Lincoln said.
Today as we honor all who served we give thanks to them for keeping that flame of democracy burning bright. Without them we would have no freedom, no democracy.
From the EOPA team that is forever indebted to our veterans.

We support the rights of immigrants and their families, giving priority to those who live or work on the Olympic Peninsula and immigrant detainees within Washington State, through access
to legal services, standing witness, family support, community education and advocacy.

OCEAN: Multicultural Center Field Trip

One of my priorities as someone who advocates for the immigrant community are children. As an adult, I learned about different issues and history around the world, some far away, and
others very close. When I realized these issues and history were never mentioned in school nor in community conversations, I felt very frustrated.
In October, the Multicultural Center hosted a field trip for the OCEAN (Opportunity Community Experience Academics Navigation) Program. OCEAN K-12 Family Partnership Program is an independent
study alternative learning experience program for students grade K-12. We started the conversation with a video where children were asked what the word immigrant means to them. I would
like to highlight one of the many interesting responses; “My family is Mexican. We didn’t move, the border moved. We are not immigrants; my ancestors have always lived where they live.”
We also had two presenters that have different but similar stories occurring at different times in history. First, Joanne Murayama shared her family pictures and quilt that tells the
story of her family living in an internment camp during the Second World War. Second, Storya Mamond, a recent immigrant from Afghanistan, read a children’s book about an Afghan family
living in camp while the Taliban came to power. As Storya read, she was able to relate and share her own experience and how her family came to Port Townsend.
Finally, we read testimonies of children living in camps at the U.S. border. The OCEAN Program students wrote postcards to stakeholders to advocate for support of unaccompanied migrant
children who need lawyers when they go to immigration court.
"It's never too early to tell our stories."

Michi Murayama and the award-winning quilt she made of the experience in the Japanese American internment camp.
Advocacy: #Let Asylum Seekers Work
When people seeking asylum come to the US, there is currently a 180-day mandated waiting period to gain work authorization. Asylum seekers need and want to work, and our economy needs
them as businesses buckle under the strain of historic labor shortages.
Congress has introduced multiple bipartisan bills to improve access to work authorization for asylum seekers. Members of Congress stand with business leaders, faith leaders, city leaders,
and community members throughout the country who all agree: let asylum seekers work.
The House Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act (ASWAA, HR 1325) is a practical and needed step forward. Learn more about how to prompt your representatives to support these efforts
