Subject: DNR Olympic and South Puget Sound Region Managers
Good morning, all.
I am pleased to announce that following open-competitive recruitments, Bill Wells will become DNR Olympic Region Manager and Don Melton will become DNR South Puget Sound Region Manager.
Don has served as Acting South Puget Sound Region Manager since June 2023. Don’s DNR career began in 2000; while attending college, he worked with DNR for 5 summers as a seasonal wildland
firefighter, engine leader, and forest crew supervisor. He joined DNR as a Forester 1 (Pacific Cascade Region) in 2006 after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Geography with a Natural
Resource Management specialization from Central Washington University. He promoted to Habitat Stewardship Specialist (Aquatic Resources Division) in 2010, Delphi Unit Forester (Pacific
Cascade Region) in 2011, Wildland Fire Operations District Manager (South Puget Sound Region) in 2014, and South Puget Sound Assistant Region Manager for Wildfire, Forest Practices,
Forest Resilience, and Camps in 2017. In 2021, Don temporarily set aside his duties as South Puget Sound ARM to complete a 7-month developmental assignment as Acting Wildland Fire Management
Assistant Division Manager for Operations. Don will begin his appointment as South Puget Sound Region Manager on November 16, 2023.
Bill recently concluded a 9-month appointment as Acting Forest Resources Division Manager. The rest of Bill’s DNR career has been with Olympic Region. Bill served for 4 years in the
U.S. Army as crewmember of a Patriot missile battery, with responsibilities as a squad boss (first line leader). After completing an Associate’s degree from Olympic College and a Bachelor’s
degree in Forest Resources from University of Washington, Bill joined DNR as a Forester 1 in 2003. He promoted to Forester 2 in 2007 and Coast District Manager in 2011. Bill has worked
extensively with the Olympic Experimental State Forest (OESF) including development of the OESF Forest Land Plan, implementation support for research, and representing DNR on the Olympic
Natural Resources Center Advisory Board. Since joining DNR, Bill has completed a Master of Natural Resources (Integrated Natural Resources) degree from University of Idaho and a Leadership
Development Certificate of Achievement from South Puget Sound Community College. To facilitate a smooth transition from duties Bill is currently performing as Acting Strategic Advisor
to the Deputy Supervisor for State Uplands, Bill will begin his appointment as Olympic Region Manager on December 1, 2023.
I am delighted that Don and Bill are taking on the responsibilities of a DNR Region Manager. Please join in congratulating them and welcoming them to their appointments.
Best regards,
Lenny
