I'm very disappointed this Healthier Together project, whose PURPOSE was to give us a new pool AND 'Provide much needed amenities within the community', won't be including public showers.
It's not only about those who can't 'afford' the (costly to many) membership fee. It's about tourists passing through and many in our community who don't want a full on membership -
they just need a shower to get clean.
Apparently, and understandably, everyone's worried about psychopaths and rapists - hence, the sexual registry background check for anyone needing to get clean. Well, the truth about
that is, the homeless and showerless folks around our town are the least of our worries.
Sexual registry background checks should be applied to e.v.er.y. membership if you're going to require background checks at all for anyone. Because statistics have it that 'A great
majority of violations are carried out by subjects with a personality within the "normal" and that they have friends, family and work. In fact many of them are people with a couple,
with whom they usually maintain relations in a conventional manner.
It's not about the mentally ill. Although the typical image of a rapist is that of a psychopath or someone who suffers from a mental disorder, to consider that sexual aggressors are
people with a mental disorder would be false and reductionist..
Most rapists and psychopaths are those leading 'normal' lives amongst us all. Firemen, CEO Business Executives, Lawyers, Journalists, Surgeons, Religious Officials, Military Personnel,
City Councilmembers etc.
We are never truly 'safe' and neither are our children. (Here's a good link: https://bigthink.com/culture-religion/top-10-jobs-of-serial-killers-and-psychopaths/ <https://bigthink.com/culture-relig

These are the occupations that attract the most serial killers and psychopaths.

Sorry, but, it seems fear is what's keeping the public from being able to just shower at this multi-million dollar facility that will be potentially granted funding because our 2019
Health Assessment study which declared Jefferson County as poor, unhealthy and in need of amenities to provide for them what the YMCA's actual mission is suppose to offer: 'Our YMCA
vision is a world where every person lives in harmony with self, with society and with creation. Our YMCA mission is to empower young people and communities worldwide to build a just,
sustainable, equitable and inclusive world, where every person can thrive in body, mind and spirit'.
You know what can 'empower' young and old people? Being CLEAN - a SHOWER. Think of it as 'economic development' and get grant $$ to help people get jobs by helping them get clean enough
to go to one!
If you can let all the potential psychopaths and rapists in for a good chunk of monthly membership fees, then you can let our homeless and showerless community members in for a minimal
fee to just take a shower. Maybe even just try to open it up for a few hours a day or something.
Seems our Hospital would want this for 'mental health' for our citizens. The School District would want this for the schoolkids who need to get clean. The Port would want this for
a good chunk of their workforce who live without showers. City and County would want this for their business's workers to get clean. The YMCA would want this to honor their historical
'mind, body, spirit must be one' motto (Thus the 'Y' triangle in the title).
Mayor Faber stood before the roomful of us at one of the first public meetings and stated that he would insist on a public shower for this facility. I know most of the Councilmembers
wanted the public shower. What happened?? City Council and our County Commissioners must have the power to insist on a public shower. You must all know we NEED one! There's nothing
in this town for anyone!
Even if you HAVE to pay another $100,000 to build one and $50,000 a year (seems awfully high) to maintain it, it should be done - FOR YOUR COMMUNITY NEED. When the Port closed it's
open showers about 5 years ago, there was talk between them and the City working together to create a new public shower. What happened?? Seems this is the perfect opportunity.
Thanks,
Joni Blanchard (I couldn't find Rich Childer's email address. Please forward to him for me???)
