Dear Kate, Heidi and Greg, Earll and I attended the BOCC meeting this afternoon and came away gravely concerned that this effort to build a new pool for our community will fail. Over the last 17 years, we personally have been involved in three major efforts to build a new pool. This feels like our last and best hope. Time is running out on our existing pool, and we don’t see another opportunity in the future. This is not about property values. It’s about the safety and well being of our children, families and seniors. The Port Townsend School District has offered free land. If the County was intent on another location, where was the offer of another site? This process has been underway for more than a year. A last minute change in the location will force a restart on the whole project. This is not just a Port Townsend facility. Chimacum girls swim on the Rivals team that trains at the pool. We have friends from Marrowstone Island, Kala Point, Port Hadlock, Cape George, Discovery Bay, etc. that regularly use the pool. The Y wants to offer free swim lessons to 3rd graders from Chimacum, Quilcene and Brinnon, including vans to help with transportation. Economic viability is important. Realistically, a Port Townsend facility will benefit from the added fees from visitors attending Centrum, Maritime Center and other events. An MPD requires two separate votes and a 60% super majority to raise property taxes. That’s a death wish. Much of life involves compromise. Please don’t cause this effort to fail while you search for some magical, ideal solution. Thanks for listening and thank you for your public service, Rena and Earll Murman Sent from my iPad
