ID July , 1987 717 SOUTH PEABODY, PORT ANGELES, WA 98362 (206) 452-8491 1-800-654-5545 EVALUATION OF HOMESITE NEAR A BLUFF IN JEFFERSON COUNTY , WASHINGTON For David Rugh July, 1987 GENERAL On July 16 , 1987 , Norman A. Dixon of Clark Associates , A Division of Northwestern Territories , Inc . , made an engineering and geological evaluation of a homesite near a bluff in northeastern Jefferson County , about half way between the towns of Quilcene and Chimacum (Section 5 , Township 27 North, Range 1 West , W. M. , Jefferson County , Washington. The more precise location of this property is shown on the enclosed map provided by the owner David J. Rugh . Mr . Rugh is interested in building a home at the location indicated on the map, which is adjacent to the south bank of Canyon Stream. SITE DESCRIPTION The homesite is situated in a forest setting , and just at the top of the slope of the south bank of Canyon Stream, as shown in the accompanying photographs , where a former log structure has been partially completed . The planned residence will occupy approximately the same location as the log structure , but will be 60 feet long and 25 feet in width, with the long dimension of the house parallelling the bank edge . The valley walls of Canyon Stream, which is about 75 feet deep, are inclined at about 32" at the home site, which is just about the long term stable angle of repose for the sand subsoils existing throughout this area. Furthermore , these slopes are everywhere heavily vegetated and covered by many trees , all of which tend to prevent surface erosion, due to the soil reinforcing effect of the extensive root systems . No evidence of recent slope movements could be observed , and most of the tree trunks on the banks were observed to be straight , not bent downslope, near their bases . CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1 . The sideslopes of Canyon Stream in the vicinity of the Rugh homesite have been stable for some time , and will continue to remain stable provided: a. the existing vegetation and tree cover are not disturbed; and b . all future surface water is directed away from the bluff edge . 2 . It is recommended that the nearest house footing be placed no closer than 10 feet from the bluff edge . 3 . Once approximately two feet of topsoil has been removed, the native undisturbed sand stratum should be fully capable of supporting footing loads of up to 2 , 500 pounds per square foot . STANDARD DISCLOSURE STATEMENT This report is based on a limited budget . Only visual inspection of the existing site conditions and/or facility was conducted . No scientific measurements , tests or calculations were performed . The findings and report are limited to the normal standard of care of the industry for a limited budget investigation without benefit of scientific data and calculations . Unless foundation plans are reviewed and the construction work is inspected by the Engineer, no warranty is made by the Engineer concerning conformity of the construction to the conclusions and recommendations of this report .
