Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Dear Jefferson County Commissioners: I've been reading a lot about the proposed new aquatic center. I oppose the project and believe that the County should not fund it, especially as it is currently planned. The project does not seem to have been sufficiently planned and the proposal has the following deficiencies: * Critical and expensive portions of the job have not been considered yet and are not mentioned in the proposal. * The project timeline appears to be well short of what is realistic. * Substantial cost overruns are likely with county taxpayers on the hook to pay for them. * Significantly less than 10 percent of the county's population are likely to ever use the facility due to the distance and time to travel from their residences to Port Townsend to use the facility, especially considering that there are already similar facilities available for west-end residents in Forks and Port Angeles. * Cape George, Kala Point, and Port Ludlow have private pools of their own so it is unlikely their residents would have any use for a pool in Port Townsend. * The estimated $110,000 to run a special election to vote on the proposal could be put to much better use. * The social and health benefits of the proposed aquatic center are much less than those derived from spending the money on affordable housing and behavioral health services in the county. I hope you will consider my reasons for opposing the proposed new aquatic center when you vote on whether or not to proceed with efforts to fund the project. Respectfully, David Tonkin 32 S.
