December 8, 2023 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> COUNTY NEWS Bridging Washington's Political Divide Two Snohomish County Council members – Republican Nate Nehring and Democrat Jared Mead – earlier this week unveiled a new nonprofit organization based on their work since the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to get youth engaged beyond the bickering. The Building Bridges Project comes out of a series of talks that the duo has given around Snohomish County in an effort to bring citizens together. It’s Time to Tell Congress the Same A common refrain for many is that broadband access is essential to modern life. From remote education and work opportunities to the online delivery of government services and resources, broadband connectivity has proven essential for participating in the modern economy as well as being maximally served by your local government. It is therefore critical that counties continue to communicate to Congress that we are most effective as partners to broadband deployment efforts — and not barriers. Recently proposed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives has sought to up-end the role of local governments in the siting decisions process of both wireless and wireline broadband infrastructure. This represents a drastic increase of over 83% from just two years ago and 53% over 2023. And … these rates are expected to escalate next year as well, with no end in sight. Next to wages and benefits, risk insurance represents the second largest expense for the county. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=739dae4411&e=03d5c964a3> STATE NEWS Yakima Sets Rain and Temperature Records as Atmospheric River Brings Flooding to the Northwest The U.S. Coast Guard rescued five people from flooded areas on Tuesday and the conditions closed rail links, schools and roads in some areas and shattered daily rainfall and temperature records in Washington state. Yakima set a new record of 60 on Tuesday, breaking an old record of 58 for the date in 1991. At 64 degrees in Walla Walla, it was as warm as parts of Florida and Mexico, according to the National Weather Service. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=aa925b7cfd&e=03d5c964a3> STATE NEWS ‘Not a Matter of If But of When’: Area Hospitals May Bring Back Mask Mandate Amid Surge of RSV Patients Amid an uptick of respiratory illness across Washington, some Spokane-area hospitals are considering a temporary return to a mask mandate for their staff, patients and visitors. That mandate is already in place in hospitals on the other side of the state. MultiCare Health systems recently announced its hospitals in King, Pierce, Thurston and Kitsap counties began enforcing a mask mandate Wednesday. MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital in central Washington reintroduced a mask mandate several weeks ago.
