Dear County Commissioners,
I live in Jefferson County in the general area of Cape George. I am very much opposed to the City’s proposal for a swimming pool complex. The region may need a pool but we do not need
the deluxe version currently proposed. I would hope you can ask the city to come forward with two or three alternate proposals, at least one of which would be for just a simple pool
and locker rooms appropriate for swim team training and other basic public uses. I might be able to support that.
As you all well know, there are many people in the county who are living in substandard housing and facing food insecurity. Many are unhoused. I can afford the higher tax and would
gladly support an additional tax to address affordable housing, food insecurity or even a higher minimum wage. But many people in this county cannot afford their current taxes so paying
higher taxes for a luxury multiple pool facility is not feasible. Surely the city officials backing this proposal can be made to see that. Of all the things this county and city need,
a luxury pool complex is not one of them.
Please deny the city’s request or require some alternative proposals from them.
