Commissioner Brotherton,
I humbly request that the Jefferson County Commissioners cease "kicking the can down the road" on the question of the PT Pool. I don't believe that additional studies are needed, that
consultants do not need to be hired, and that the three of you are more than capable of making the right decision at this time.
I have attended several community meetings on the PT Pool and observed that the folks behind the PT Pool seem to be changing their story. Initially, they stated that they only considered
rebuilding the pool on the existing site. After hearing public opinion, their story changed to having considered other locations. However, this begs reality and honesty. The fact is
that the PT Pool group only wants the pool built on the existing Mountain View school site, that the proposed facility costs more than the good citizens of the City of PT can afford,
and that the PT Pool group wants to extend a financing scheme that will tax all Jefferson County residents for an amenity that will principally benefit to good citizens of PT.
I am not opposed to a pool.
The fine citizens of PT should build only the facility that they can afford.
In this case, if JC folks don't fund the pool, I see nothing wrong with charging a differential admission fee for non-PT residents.
I am very much in favor of a pool in the Tri-Area.
In this case, I am in favor of a junior taxing district that assesses property taxes throughout the county.
Please don't ever consider a sales tax to fund any or all of the pool. Sales taxes are regressive. They hurt the poor more than the wealthy. And please don't insult the collective intelligence
of your constituents, 2/10 of 1% is a real, meaningful number, and it is an unjust tax on the poor. If it is enough to fund the pool, it is real money. Please don't try to minimize
it. And this is only the beginning. The heat and humidity of indoor pools wrecks havoc on the ceiling, and ceiling replacement is a predictable, regular expense.
From a diversity, equity and inclusion perspective, please consider building the pool in Chimacum, on land already owned by JC, specifically parcel 963000101, an 8.42 acre parcel just
west of parcel 901113007, H J Carroll Park. The water and sewer needs should not pose an insurmountable problem to our elected leaders and the PUD. A pool in PT just doesn't serve the
largely rural, and less economically advantaged population in the south county. Distances are great, fuel prices are high. A pool in PT does not favor the environmental costs. A pool
in PT, ostensibly to serve the entire county is simply elitist and inconsiderate.
Please do not hurt the poor. Please do not support putting a county-wide sales tax on the ballot to primarily benefit the city of PT.
Respectively submitted,
Bob Palmer
