HomeMy WebLinkAbout121523 email Mt View gymnasiumCommissioners: In general, I do support a new pool facility in Jefferson County, if it is affordable, but I strenuously object to tearing down the gymnasium at Mt View to accomplish
that goal.
The Mt View YMCA gym is used by countless kids, basketball players, as well as the 200+ mostly senior members of the PT Pickleball Club.
While raising our two sons in Port Townsend, my wife and I witnessed the popular roller skating rink become yet another of this community’s numerous churches, and the bowling alley be
transformed into yet another grocery store.
Our sons missed them both. Our sons did learn to swim in that little old pool, and both now are divers, surfers, and sailors.
With younger people returning to their home town, others moving to Port Townsend to raise their families, and with the highest average age in the state of active seniors, the gym needs
to be preserved and improved, not torn down.
As I understand it, the current plan to build the new pool at the Mt View location involves knocking down the gym and not replacing it, despite a cost of nearly $40,000,000.
So let’s fix the old pool for a fraction of the cost, and keep the gym.
With deep respect and gratitude for the work you do.
