A new essay from someone who was part of that turnaround has lessons for other communities. There when it happened: Robert Doar of the American Enterprise Institute <https://outreach.better-cities.org/index.php/campaigns/fh7276mnvb922/track-url/zd62977a3mbbd/e2af972739694e27ce669068c140170f 0b6180ab> spent almost two decades on the front lines of New York City’s welfare and social services programs, from 1995 as a deputy commissioner in the city’s child support enforcement program through his tenure on the city’s Human Resources Commission ending in 2014. What cities and counties can do: As these programs come increasingly under scrutiny, it's worth looking at proactive reforms. But That Doesn't Mean Cities Should Wait <https://outreach.better-cities.org/index.php/campaigns/fh7276mnvb922/track-url/zd62977a3mbbd/58e5d383f84e14882279664d052823137e8bb51a> For those talking about housing policy (and these days that seems like everybody!), Montana's reforms were the standout story of the summer. So should other cities wait for statehouse reforms? Nope! As BCP Policy Director Patrick Tuohey points out, there are plenty of ready-to-run options for cities that want to increase their housing supply and stabilize fast-rising prices without waiting on the legislature. Bonus: Local control: While state housing reforms have their place -- and Montana's reforms are good indeed -- local changes are better able to match the specifics and priorities of the community.
