HomeMy WebLinkAbout122723 email Vote against a pool_ NO MORE TAXESCounty commissioners,
it is my understanding that plenty of taxpayers’ money is being spent on studies and consultants about the placement of a new pool in Port Townsend at the expense of all county taxpayers.
How many studies need to be done? Do you keep doing them until you get an answer you want?
Since 2014, the YMCA has explored a capital campaign to raise the funds for a new pool.
February 2, 2015, there was an article in the Peninsula Daily News announcing the YMCA will begin a capital campaign to raise the targeted funds. The funds were going to be raised through
donations and grants.
April 17, 2019, an article in the PT Leader announcing the YMCA was going to “keep the gym and replace the pool” at Mountainview. Once again, a capital campaign to raise funds was mentioned.
What became of these capital campaigns?
Since 2019, Healthier Together of Port Townsend is exploring ways to make this a reality. Have you read any of the material that is available on their website? Plenty of studies have
been completed. Many ideas kicked about and still no support for a pool or health center.
We are not talking about funding for an emergency issue, or more funding for the hospital district or the fire department district or housing for the homeless or needed infrastructure.
We are talking about a pool that, although very nice, is not a necessity of life, especially when you are asking all of us in the entire county to add more taxation to our already shrinking
personal budgets.
Why are you spending our hard-earned money on something that is not an emergency for the county? It is not only absurd, but borders on ridiculous and unfair.
Frankly, such a decision places you in a very poor light with voters. We elected you so that you could make responsible decisions that would benefit all of us, not the few. You seem
to be unaware of the real needs of your constituents. Most of the people in Jefferson County are on fixed incomes.
As a voter in South County, I totally object to spending our money so that less than one percent of the population of the entire county can enjoy a facility.
Please stop this madness. Please have some common sense.
Respectfully,
Patricia Herold
