And in Snohomish County, public defenders say that crisis will keep inching closer if nothing is done. High student debt and low wages in the profession have led to fewer people entering public defense, a system already facing a lawyer shortage. On top of that, cities and counties are left with the burden of paying for the public defense system, with little assistance from the state. But a new report <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id =48fde93239&e=d6a9a6cb0d> shows they’re also bringing increased property taxes for some people in those counties. The study from the Washington State Association of Counties concludes there are inconsistencies in the ways state and local governments measure the value of clean energy projects. The pre-registration process is the first step for counties pursuing elective pay for IRA clean energy tax credits <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/tra ck/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=e99ba7cbcd&e=d6a9a6cb0d> , in which tax-exempt entities can receive direct payments equal to the value of a tax credit for eligible clean energy projects, so long as the project is placed into service in a tax year beginning after December 31, 2022. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=a14bd0e3be&e=d6a9a6cb0d> COUNTY NEWS Clallam County Approves $500K Grant to Habitat Housing Project Clallam County Commissioners approved a half-million dollar grant Tuesday to help Habitat For Humanity of Clallam County <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=a 491238633&e=d6a9a6cb0d> get a step closer to beginning site work on a 50-unit affordable home development in Sequim. The funding will come from what is left of the $15 million in federal stimulus funding the County received during the pandemic in 2021, known as ARPA funds. At the time, County Commissioners identified eight priority areas that they would dedicate the ARPA funds to, and “Affordable housing/homelessness support” is among those categories. They began the meeting by reappointing the members of the County Fair Board and the Board of Equalization, and by renewing the service agreement with the county museum. Additionally, the commissioners agreed to match the funding for the community pool with the Town of Cathlamet up to $50,000.
