But to accelerate progress in 2024 — and fuel the next discoveries for our loved ones and community <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=71cVPhYaQaBaj0H8dH4bz9ZlVZUgHz2jtrINoECzHDgm0UzyooIebA> — we need your renewed support. More breakthroughs are on the way. One of the big ones could affect people facing blood cancers like leukemia. Bone marrow transplants have saved the lives of thousands of blood cancer patients, but graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) can be a life-threatening complication. Researchers want to know why. Your 2024 renewal gift could help find the answer. <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=f9ji8gu2b1GIremV5qGcOfyDrPNDmbLg4qOQci0JnghTFmSvl0oi1w> A study by Motoko Koyama, MD, PhD, and Geoffrey Hill, MD international transplant leader, Fred Hutch and UW Medicine, focuses on patients’ pre-transplant gut microbiomes, made up of the trillions of tiny organisms that live there. Using preclinical models and complex computational analyses, Drs. Koyama and Hill were able to identify specific bacteria that help instigate or suppress GVHD. “Our work shows that the pre-transplant microbiome could be the focus of therapies to reduce GVHD severity,” says Dr. Koyama. Your 2024 renewal gift is crucial to pursuing promising research like this.
