Below right: a Land Trust Conservation Projects Committee volunteer during site assessment. Extraordinary Property Protected Forever: 155 Forested Acres with a Mile of Salmon Creek We’re thrilled to share that we’ve recently completed the permanent protection of an extraordinary 155-acre property in the Snow and Salmon Creeks watershed. Here, a full mile of Salmon Creek and six tributaries stream down steep forested slopes that lead eventually into Discovery Bay and into the Strait of Juan De Fuca on the north side of the Olympic Peninsula: the home waters of the Strait of Juan De Fuca’s threatened summer chum population. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=ed73f43473&e=c62e014255> “This is such an important project — not only because of the property’s size and location, but because of the full mile of Salmon Creek that runs through it,” says Blaise Sullivan, Jefferson Land Trust’s Conservation Coordinator. “To be able to protect a full mile of a salmon-bearing creek by working with a single willing landowner is really significant.” Blaise adds, “Protecting the water quality of this stretch of Salmon Creek also affects the downstream water quality of Discovery Bay and the shared estuary of Salmon and Snow Creeks, where several salmonid species return after the ocean stage of their life cycles.” Since 2001, working with willing landowners and many partners including the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, North Olympic Salmon Coalition, and others, Jefferson Land Trust has protected 547 acres of land and wildlife habitat in the Snow and Salmon Creeks watershed for the benefit of native salmon and other wildlife. Now, we've taken a big, 155-acre stride forward in supporting local salmon and wildlife — and building a healthier and more resilient Peninsula for all. Jefferson Land Trust is now seeking volunteers to assist with an innovative bird monitoring study <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=6004f80ce7&e=c62e014 255> we recently launched on several of our nature preserves. Assessing the presence of certain indicator bird species will help us determine whether our forest management activities are succeeding in creating the habitat conditions that birds and other local wildlife need to thrive. Volunteers are needed to help manually verify thousands of acoustic birdsong recordings that were collected at our preserves over a week-long period. This data will provide a baseline of bird use and help us improve the long-term survival of Western Washington forest bird species through forest habitat improvements. Volunteers will be provided with an instruction manual and a pre-recorded Zoom tutorial on how to access the bird recordings through a free online interface, called Arbimon, and shown how to verify the identity of the recorded birdsong with one of our fifteen indicator species, either by ear or using Merlin Bird ID (a free bird ID app) on their personal mobile devices. This is a home-based, remote volunteer opportunity that runs from now through March 2024. Volunteers will need access to a reliable internet connection. Experience with identifying birdsong is helpful, but not necessary. Each song may take as little as 10 seconds to manually verify. Volunteers are asked to contribute a minimum of three hours for training and evaluation of the recordings. Additional staff support will be provided to volunteers as needed. If you’re interested and would like to know more, please contact Jefferson Land Trust’s Office and Preserve Assistant, Cristina, at cvillalobos@saveland.org <mailto:cvillalobos@saveland.org?subject=B ird%20Study%20Volunteering> by Wednesday, February 7. Through meditative guidance, we remember how to walk slowly, connect to the earth, and breathe more deeply. By listening to our feet, we unravel from old patterns, taught to us by a fast culture and over-protective, constrictive footwear. For cold season walks, come wearing warm clothing! Once the feet get moving, the circulation provides natural warming to the feet. You are welcome to come in barefoot style footwear. Come with your curiosity and questions. Rain or shine. All feet are welcome! Questions?
