‘Verge of Collapse’: Washington Public Defenders Swamped by Cases
Larry Jefferson went to justices of the Washington State Supreme Court last fall with an unprecedented request for a public defense system he told them is “on the verge of collapse.”
Jefferson, director of the state’s Office of Public Defense, asked them to halt, for 90 days, the assigning of new felony cases to public defenders if the accused was not in custody
so they could clear a backlog of clients who were in jail.

On December 20, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced $9.7 billion in funding for the Bridge Investment Program (BIP) through Fiscal Year (FY) 2026. The BIP is a competitive
grant program focused on rehabilitating existing bridges to reduce the number of bridges in poor condition and bridges in fair condition at risk of falling into poor condition.

Johnson & Johnson to Pay Nearly $150M Over its Role Fueling Opioid Epidemic
To avoid trial in Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s lawsuit, opioid manufacturer and raw material supplier Johnson & Johnson will pay $149.5 million to Washington state over its role fueling
the opioid epidemic. Today’s resolution, filed in King County Superior Court, provides Washington and its local governments with tens of millions of dollars more to combat the fentanyl
epidemic compared to the settlement that Ferguson rejected in 2021. Washington is one of three states receiving more than they would have under the 2021 multistate settlement.
