HomeMy WebLinkAboutPRESENTATION re Noxious Weed SlidesJEFFERSON COUNTY NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL BOARD February 5, 2024 Sophie DeGroot OVERVIEW •Highlights from 2023 •2024 Goals •Noxious Weed Free Gravel Program 2023 SNAPSHOT •150 acres controlled for noxious weeds •200 miles surveyed •156 outreach letters •400+ landowner interactions •5 Contracts with public agencies •Worked with 2 AmeriCorps Crews •Partnered with Clallam County Weed Board FORT WORDEN •Total of 25-acres controlled for noxious weeds around the park •Great partnership getting some employees trained to help with more consistent control •Focus on poison hemlock around campground and trails •Holly removal COUNTY ROADS •65 acres controlled for noxious weeds •150 miles of County roads surveyed •Wild chervil, tansy ragwort, spotted knapweed, knotweed, spotted jewelweed, shiny geranium EARLY DETECTION, RAPID RESPONSE •Milk thistle, Class A •A small infestation was found on private property when the landowners were seeking help with poison hemlock •By identifying this weed and eliminating all propagating parts, we were able to eliminate the risk of a totally unchecked infestation •Follow-up and surveys of the area are still necessary 2024 GOALS •6 contracts with public agencies •Hire 1 additional staff member •200+ acres controlled •400+ road miles surveyed •600+ landowner interactions •Building relationships with School Districts, Port Authority, County Parks & Rec •Work with WCC Crew •Partner with Clallam County Weed Board NOTABLE ADDS TO THE 2024 JEFFERSON COUNTY WEED LIST •Spurge laurel •Focus on surveying,raising awareness •Scotch broom •“within 100-ft of aggregate piles & storage facilities” STATE PARKS •Newest Contract will include all State Parks in Jefferson County •From Fort Flagler to Triton Cove •Working closely with Park Rangers and Region Managers •Poison hemlock,knotweed,yellow archangel NOXIOUS WEED -FREE PROGRAM •New program for Jefferson County in 2024 and beyond…. •An important measure to help stop the spread of noxious weed seeds to new areas and project sites •Free inspections of all mining pits, storage & transfer facilities for all aggregate materials •Gravel,rock,sand,soil, woodchips, mulch, etc. •Inspection standards created to meet the North American Invasive Species Management Association standards, as well as our neighbors in Clallam County, the Forest Service, and National Park Service THANK YOU Sophie DeGroot sdegroot@co.jefferson.wa.us 360-316-9332 OR Come Visit WSU Ext 121 Oak Bay Road Port Hadlock, WA 98339
