Black Shield Oyster Co. Habitat Report MSA | 1 Black Shield Oyster Co. Habitat Survey Report (to accompany map dated 10/18/2021) A habitat survey was performed on June 24, 2021 from approximately 10:00 am to 11:00 am at an oyster aquaculture project site located near 312251 US-101, Brinnon, WA 98320. Darby Flanagan and Griffin Hoins from Marine Surveys & Assessments surveyed along 9 transects at low tide to identify flora, fauna, substrate types and other qualitative information. Weather was sunny and calm. The survey area is shown in Figure 2. Nine transects (T1-T9) were surveyed; each was 115 ft long and transects were separated by each other by 10 ft, running between existing oyster lines and bags (Figure 1). Substrate was mud, pebble, shell hash, and oysters throughout the survey area. Areas of sparse, low density macroalgae were recorded at the site and included: • Ulva 2% cover; • Desmarestia 2 to 20% cover. The total percent cover of vegetation within this area is typically calculated and mapped to determine vegetation scenarios (Figure 2). Ulva is not included in these mapped calculations because the area is not documented as a herring spawning zone. No eelgrass or kelp was documented at the site. Figure 1.
