Larry joined JCIRA in 2018, following his move to Port Ludlow and retirement from the railroad industry and an early career as an assistant mathematics professor at Loyola University. Throughout his life, Larry exhibited unwavering compassion and a commitment to aiding others, particularly immigrants. In Nebraska, Larry, and his wife Diane, served as sponsors for a Mexican family fleeing gang violence. Their extensive support facilitated the family's resettlement, continuing even after their move to Jefferson County, where Larry dedicated his time as a volunteer with JCIRA. Larry served as co-chair and chair of JCIRA from 2020 until October 2023. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in guiding JCIRA through significant expansion, culminating in the successful launch of the JCIRA Multicultural Center in Port Townsend. We are deeply grateful for Larry's immense contributions to immigrants and our community. It is an honor to have known such an extraordinary person. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched. Free Tax Preparation Services for All Taxes, it’s that time of year! Preparing and filing your annual federal taxes can be a challenging experience. Thanks to David Segleau, AARP’s only Spanish-speaking Tax-Aid volunteer in the Port Townsend area, for making this daunting task easier. David held an informative presentation at the Multicultural Center on January 28. He provided information on what documents are needed, what forms are required, and how to get an ITIN number to file taxes if one doesn’t have a social security number. Members of the Spanish-speaking community now know what they need to do and left JCIRA with a scheduled appointment with David. You can still make an appointment with David by calling 360-302-2056. He is available by appointment on Tuesdays and Fridays at the Port Townsend Community Center from January 30th – April 15. <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/2c70add5-2d85-1f55-2f72-92f7fcdd08cc.jpg> <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/6cb776eb-05d4-bec1-e06b-6df4cb8be022.jpg> Janey North from Winter Warmth Clothing Drive with Courtney’s car full of coats, hats, scarves, and gloves for immigrant families in Forks and around Jefferson County. JCIRA delivered 28 coats with help from Winter Warmth and also generous private donors. Most of the coats went to children under 12 years of age. What's Happening at JCIRA Multicultural Center: Workshop for Student Financial Aid <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/3895e7f8-9ae8-83d6-2bba-c3be5293e6b6.jpg> Despite the icy conditions, on January 18th, a workshop on student financial aid was held at the JCIRA Multicultural Center. WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) programs provide financial aid that can be used for community colleges, universities, and technical schools. Local students and their parents learned about applying for WASFA/FAFSA financial aid. Support in both Spanish and English were provided by JCIRA board members and staff. The program is in partnership with the Port Townsend Library, who received a grant from the state to help improve the number of FAFSA/WASFA applicants in our area. Washington’s ranking of application submissions is very low in comparison to other states, and this is an effort to change that. JCIRA appreciates all the support that the PT Library has provided, and we hope we have made a difference. If you or someone you know plans to go to college either for the first time or would like to return to college but needs financial support to make it happen, please ask them to contact the JCIRA office at 360-232-6070. We’re still here to help. It’s not too late! See the Find Help Section of the JCIRA Website Now In Spanish! Although we do not yet have an entire Spanish-language website, we are increasingly adding more Spanish content to our existing site. Now, we have translated the Find Help section of the JCIRA website to make it easier for the large number of Spanish-speaking immigrants in our community to find: • Cash for rent, school fees, or other living expenses • Food, housing, or medical care • Legal aid • Community facilities and other resources Thanks to volunteer Stephanie Lutgring and JCIRA Outreach Coordinator Natalia Durán for their assistance in creating this useful new section, Encontrar Ayuda <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track /click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=cf9f949221&e=b98e774f91> . JCIRA Advocates in Olympia JCIRA participated in the annual Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Day on February 7. Look for a full report in the next issue.
