AJC Statement on passage of WA State Democratic Central Committee Ceasefire Resolution, The City of Bremerton, WA adopts the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism. Click to View in Browser <http://act.ajc.org/images/content/pagebuilder/E-Banner_Seattle_WHITE.png> Letter from the AJC Seattle Board President Friends, It's been 126 days since the terrorist attack on Israel. 126 days since hostages were taken into Gaza, 126 days since Jews worldwide became the targets of antisemitic vitriol and violence. And, roughly, about 125 days since the first calls for ceasefire. These hasty demands for ceasefire have become vogue in certain circles, fashionable wear for the activist class without regard for the ideology or actions of Hamas, the violators of the last ceasefire in place through October 6. They don’t consider the extraordinary and unprecedented <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i= Vg9MIAU-G0FPMR0buhkD2m9NvTRfZ39H83A6PVyC-xQzlCVYn214dw> efforts of the IDF to reduce civilian casualties, or the impact on local Jewish communities through vandalism, violence, and intimidation <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=EBstybGfudi-gL4ym7gnt7eMF8j5BBjMPNzDzJsNm-786wHkqMcDkQ> . We will continue to reject this message, and counter it with pride and solidarity — in the form of the billions sent to Israel from diaspora Jews since October, in bake sales for Israel <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=XzohmF-Q-aARzUCIsHFyETj1u__bDiXNWfieKrs8Sv2L5AvPXigHAA> on college campuses, in peaceful marches <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=QwIgRtKTCiuGg8CI1ntapAh-Zk86Hgxudu tstfdjnfgQ0XDyrHzVaA> that don't block freeways, and in our commitment to bear witness in the face of denialism. One leader, calling out the weaponization of shame against the Jewish people and the sinister demands that we stick to "safe" Jewish topics, put it especially well: <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=LHm-rasNwF2vTmF7rPZhZDGJnw6FlTPZdx1sZ-zkeQ1uNB1hp8fuIw> "It’s time for us all to stand up to the systematic shaming of the Jewish people and Israel over the past 100 days — to call it out, name it and bring it into the light. And while we do that, I do believe there is an antidote: community. Coming together as family, as Israel as Jewish people, and with those we know who support us: our friends, namely the people of other faiths and traditions and tribes who love Israel. Find them, bring them close and know that we are not alone. We will not be ashamed." AJC Seattle's statement on the passage of a ceasefire resolution in Washington state is below, and was covered by local tv <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=rdkkGHF9VsVJpQQz4hJkjQ0YPDWIVnQvyfT4Z-dNfte ffP8xcyr2Cw> and podcasts <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=IKzl8VYzXAPqWhxjODmGiqJZBVWyPWwd4_ZCTnOLIf5DmFyIis3Ftg> , as well. We will continue to speak with moral clarity on the topic, to express our public and private gratitude for the elected officials and leaders who continue to stand with us, and to lift up Jewish pride wherever we see it. Join us — contact your state legislators <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=W5TMYX9V4QXTnjM-odlbpOVYEGFB7XLQ7GjoEVM6_GmfOVyB4RF2OA> in support of mandatory Holocaust education, reject calls for ceasefire <http://seattle.aj c.org/site/R?i=tKnXkEl8VTW3l3Xbv89STpUYaJtieay-kXpkWKOSMSKSEuIHOjIbZw> which embolden terrorists, and seek out that community which is an antidote to intimidation. Am Yisrael Chai, Sam Jefferies Board President, AJC Seattle American Jewish Committee Statement on Passage of Washington State Democratic Central Committee Ceasefire Resolution We are deeply disappointed in the passage of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza by the Washington State Democratic Central Committee (WSDCC). This resolution was drafted without sufficient input from the state’s Jewish community, which will be directly impacted by its passage. This is evidenced by the horrific desecration and defacement of Herzl-Ner Tamid Congregation, hours after the City of Seattle passed a similar resolution in November 2023. The U.S. and a growing list of countries have paused their funding to UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) amid serious allegations that some of its staff members were involved in the October 7 terror attacks, in which Hamas terrorists murdered, raped, and took hostage Israelis. Yet, the WSDCC resolution chooses to champion UNRWA. We are deeply grateful for the members of Congress and others who have stood with the Jewish community in these difficult times, and remain committed to working with our elected officials, both Democratic and Republican, who support the safety and security of Jews, at home in Washington State and around the world. The City of Bremerton, WA adopts the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism. Three months almost to the day after a Bremerton City Council meeting was Zoom-bombed with antisemitic hate speech, the Council voted unanimously (7-0) on January 17th, 2024 to adopt the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=ChbLx0eE1u28bPvYEPyzwI9EKmEKJKfO68LHWgj_dqB4_lJeKk-Qlg> "in full for the City of Bremerton, including the examples provided by the IHRA" as a tool to help the city identify, combat, and respond to antisemitic hate speech and hate crimes. The Council President at the time of the Zoom bombing, Jeff Coughlin, was the primary author of the resolution, and the Council as a whole took this action because of AJC's work to encourage that Jewish community voices be centered in the response to an antisemitic hate crime Bremerton's passage of the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism means that at least one jurisdiction in each of the four Puget Sound metro area counties has now adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism: Tacoma (Pierce County), Bellevue (King County), Des Moines (King County), Mill Creek (Snohomish County), Snohomish County itself, and now Bremerton (Kitsap County). In addition, King County's definition makes use of IHRA, though it does not simply adopt it as written like the others on this list. Thank you to the City Council of the City of Bremerton, WA for the Resolution adopting the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=JK0bdffNipfDG0whouXhU06CiRuGW9FZwQS O7virt98SrjDpenARYQ> .
