Morning Kate,
I am hoping you can help me understand how the downtown shelter is out of funding in 3 months. Did the funding board not fund the downtown shelter? As you can imagine we are getting
more and more request to support those who are without homes on our streets and now we are getting calls from community members and the folks living in the downtown shelter. I did reach
out to Cherish in Feb. and ask if it was closing and she assured me they were working on it. Now this morning received emails from the community stating that Kathy Morgan reports they
are out of funds and closing the shelter March 31st. I really believe the county needs to look at the cost of the shelter, where the funds are going and how is this project out of
funds in three months. Is it financially responsible to continue to support a bigger more expensive shelter when operating cost of this small shelter is beyond their financial capabilities.
This has been an ongoing issue of OlyCap abilities to fund the downtown shelter and with everything going up in cost. I wonder if the county commissioners have looked at the cost of
operating and what the new proposed shelter will need in support of the county funds yearly. I have heard that with house sales going down they will be less funding available and I
am hoping we can as a community look at more permanent solutions to housing.
We have been invited to this meeting I posted below and I feel like it is time for an honest conversation on where is the funding going where commerce money for shelter going and is
this feasible to have an agency that does not have the ability to operate the shelter.
On March 6th, 2:30 - 4:15 PM at the Olycap Conference Room @ 713 Park Ave, Port Townsend there will be a meeting of the non-profit, faith, government, advocates, and those with lived
experience to decide how we respond as a compassionate community to the loss of our only emergency shelter.
