However, for people at greater risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) because of a history of pre-cancerous colon adenomas, screening practices like more frequent colonoscopies can also be an overly invasive and expensive burden — especially when only a fraction of those individuals will go on to develop CRC within the next few years. Biomarkers that point out the people most at risk of developing CRC could reduce this burden. Researchers at Fred Hutch, led by Dr. Ming Yu in the Grady Lab, explored specific changes to the EVL gene as one such biomarker. The team found that higher levels of the modified EVL gene were strongly associated with recurrent adenomas and cancer. This finding could help more accurately assess individuals’ risk and plan the ideal timing for their future screenings.
