These structures, although convenient for human transportation needs, pose a threat to migratory fish by limiting their movements and access to essential food and spawning areas. The
limitation of these crucial journeys negatively impacts entire freshwater ecosystems.
With $3.8 billion in funds from the Legislature, the Washington State Department of Transportation’s court-ordered removal of salmon-blocking culverts will fulfill all but 10% of its
2030 goal, with Alaska following suit. But there is still so much more to be done!
