Yair Rosenberg to speak the AJC Seattle Advocacy in Action Dinner - March 26, 2024. Click to View in Browser <http://act.ajc.org/images/content/pagebuilder/E-Banner_Seattle_WHITE.png> Letter from AJC Seattle Board President Friends, Last week in Miami, American Jewish Committee (AJC) launched a new Women's Global Leadership Network, a new initiative tailored to women leaders driving change and making meaningful impact around the world. The occasion, part of the National Leadership Council (NLC) Advocacy Fly-in, was marked by the usual pomp and circumstance for such an event, but also by powerful words from powerful voices so desperately needed in the conversation about the future of Israel and the Jewish people. One of those voices was Mai Gutman <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=CWhBxgOk1d7OFI5KCyHaQU09ePiT5hvNPvSIrgWEhwss2OMvrncvww> , an IDF combat veteran who was supposed to attend the Nova Music Festival in Southern Israel on October 7. She spoke powerfully and proudly of her service - as a female soldier and as a ferocious advocate on social media <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=Opl mQroUh1wP0P7sDYzs-aGmTvu9oAx0Y0mRz1PVl11JnOlbS9EhJg> , itself a battleground of antisemitic propaganda and misinformation. Mai's words reminded me of the many heroines throughout Jewish history. While we fight desperately to prevent the erasure of Jewish women's experiences, including the weaponized sexual assault on October 7, we must bear witness without allowing the Jewish experience to be defined by victimhood. Yes, Jewish women worldwide feel betrayed <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=J01ryRwYKYbb 5LksMzNLDTh17vC__GQXChg3Srk3Mh6IEzB_t5XQ7w> , as AJC's Berlin office director wrote recently. The feminist movement's response has been muted at best, complicit <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=8uXzwI01Krog-oUPvC2kWKQvzvdjJoWuqVcc80A82K59rpkJ56CNXA> at worst. Organizations and individuals like Sheryl Sandberg <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=7J-eeh0EsJ5lN_VQrI7nRS0RHc-QQURH7gUvnfLf6PA_USgrMSOQIA> have rejected silence or erasure and demanded that the world confront the horrifying realities we know to be true. Yet, the Jewish community is defined by more than its shared tragedies. Jewish women have triumphed, from biblical times today, in the face of great odds with strength, grace, and perseverance. Through her service and courage, Mai Gutman joined a long line of Jewish women who have led in word <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i =waNbTLrxSwl3y14f7oH7Mh02P0h7dukhrM07XhUwUZGrEXCeU29bRg> , deed <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=887M7-bS5YZMkM2pwIEysftafw1-fqcmwA0oloVMto8LiPn9bsJPNw> , and thought <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i =6qOJXszFXUwoZVooK46GjBYCqS_Zez3FyNB916uMmspmsteC1A2_DQ> . Our daughters and sons should be told of the modern day heroism of Mai and of her compatriots in the army, including the all-female IDF tank corps <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=EwFn80VdQpJgpB_Au-MK6mqPsaxN5HXxcjC-2MkrOSdHt83mlmJgDg> , just as Golda Meir and others have been feted for generations. In the Pacific Northwest, we continue to engage wherever and whenever needed, drawing on the strength of so many local Jewish women and on partner organizations to identify and combat antisemitism and anti-Zionism within the City of Seattle <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=zu2_cAk79I6S4gqPh6pyv2MAQkQ22V8tPS3pP1s8f7sKm3bxi8XSSg> , training programs for staff in the largest county in Washington state, local school districts <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=QCc-1jMWTtcO3_Uzf9I9JWVOc7bIEt4DTw9M-1q6WXHNDYTNA4AZJw> , bar associations <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R? i=fOY0tBAhNbZa9OByET2gsC3mDRrhS0bXgRnZ17nvSGLDXA92UnbukA> , legislative district political parties, and more. At times, the work can feel ceaseless. It can also feel motivating - especially when led by the courageous women here at home and inspired by the women and girls around the world. Not only is it the lone resource to analyze five years of consecutive data on the impact of antisemitism on American Jews, it was also in the field during a critical moment: October and November 2023. The 2023 SURVEY OF AMERICAN JEWS <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=LzedCe881qSZyLsCpwAk0S6yQvQWFKT5idD6pqaTXwz-eo2e5MicXA> , conducted by the independent research firm SSRS, soft-launched on October 5, 2023. Fieldwork paused following October 7 in response to the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel. The questionnaire was adjusted to measure awareness of the attacks and the impact on feelings of safety in the U.S. The revised survey fully launched on October 17 and was in the field past mid-November. This year’s results must be analyzed by knowing the broader geopolitical context in the Middle East. View the results <http://seattle.ajc.org/site/R?i=uInRxRd3LSLNGLv6bg0VO4mPz_-qJZ4xOPdHC41EyThaqoqm8wrH6g> from the Survey of American Jews, Survey of the U.S. General Public <http://seattle.ajc.org/ site/R?i=H65zSdNfAGkDKQg7P24_rjc8sqQ3I2QE7-oS-0CHpubk32vxzTCgQg> and the comparison of American Jewish and the General Public as it pertains to antisemitism.
