For nearly three decades, Jefferson Land Trust has worked with the community, Jefferson County, and the City of Port Townsend to protect the Quimper Wildlife Corridor <https://saveland.us4.list-manag e.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=e97b0afd4c&e=c62e014255> piece by piece. Now, we’ve arrived at a milestone decades in the making: facilitating the purchase and permanent protection of 107 acres of forestland by Jefferson County through the Trust Land Transfer program of the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=62d5c38301&e=c62e014255> “These are such important pieces of the Quimper Wildlife Corridor puzzle,” said County Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour. “It’s very exciting that the long-held vision for these properties is being realized. They will benefit the community and wildlife for generations.” The Land Trust was able to facilitate the transfer of the three beautiful forest properties — known as Quimper West, Quimper East, and Baby Quimper — from DNR to Jefferson County ownership for permanent protection thanks in large part to the incredible outpouring of community support we received after launching the Quimper Wildlife Corridor Challenge <https://saveland.us4.list-manage. com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=7758d24e7f&e=c62e014255> in early 2021. Community donations were matched by a grant from the Jefferson County Conservation Futures Fund to reach the sale price. This acreage, comprising three separate properties, is the largest addition to the corridor yet. Its successful protection is the result of many years of collaboration, creative problem solving, and extraordinary community support. Conservation Breakfast 2024 Draws a Crowd Thank you to all who joined us on the morning of Thursday, March 14 for virtual Conservation Breakfast 2024! It was our biggest Breakfast yet, with more than 350 community members tuning in on Zoom for this year’s program, “The Olympic Cougar Project: Conservation in a Human-Dominated Landscape,” featuring keynote speakers biologist Dr. Mark Elbroch and his teammate Andy Stratton from Panthera <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=4240a9587d&e=c62e014255> . Panthera is a nonprofit organization devoted to the conservation of the world’s 40 species of wild cats and the ecosystems they inhabit. We were honored to begin the event with warm words and a blessing shared by Dana Ward, member of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Council. Then, Dr. Elbroch and Andy led us on an inspirational and educational journey. They shared compelling insights into the evolving role of the Olympic Peninsula as an isolated enclave for cougars, relayed fascinating information about cougar dispersal and movement, showed how Panthera and the many individuals and partner groups that make up the Olympic Cougar Project safely collar and track cats, and much more. Honoring the Life and Legacy of Lee Doughty Port Townsend resident Walter Lee Doughty, known locally as “Lee,” passed away in 2022 at the age of 84. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=3993c3675f&e=c62e014255> Lee was a lifelong supporter of environmental causes and a member of the Jefferson Land Trust community. As an Evergreen Steward <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730 fe5fb21&id=190a091b30&e=c62e014255> for more than five years, he made a regular monthly gift to Jefferson Land Trust. At the end of his life, Lee surprised and moved us by leaving the bulk of his estate to Jefferson Land Trust — an extraordinarily generous gift. Teri Nomura was Lee’s real estate agent, and the executor of his estate. It was Teri who helped Lee put his affairs in order in the last months of his life, during the summer of 2022. Recently, she sat down with us to share some insights into Lee’s life, and his values. “Lee really believed there should be more wild places,” Teri said. “Conserving places for animals to live was important to him. Now that Lee’s legacy is with Jefferson Land Trust, it will be used for environmental causes — and he would have been happy with that." Those interested in contributing to the development and management of Chimacum Ridge Community Forest are encouraged to apply. The Board welcomes individuals with expertise, skills or experience in forest and timber management, education, community development, ecology and natural sciences, business development, and/or environmental health to apply and seeks a broad representation of community members to enrich our community forest, fostering inclusivity and benefiting the community as a whole. This spring, the forest health assessments will need to be completed before the end of May. Volunteers will work in teams of two to four for quality control and safety, as the assessments require walking off trail, through thick brush, and over uneven terrain. This project also involves entering data into an online data form after the in-the-forest assessment is complete. The forest health assessments help us evaluate the ecological integrity and functions of forests and streams within our preserves. Our goal is to have ongoing and historical evidence of the progress that our care and management is making at our preserves. Assessments like these provide clear indications about which areas of our preserves need the most attention to accomplish our various management goals. If you’re interested in volunteering to be on the forest health assessment team, please contact Cristina Villalobos at cvillalobos@saveland.org <mailto:cvillalobos@saveland.org?subject=Forest%20Healt h%20Assessment%20volunteering> by Wednesday, April 3. We're Seeking Volunteers: Youth Education Are you interested in inspiring future generations to be good caretakers of our lands? At Jefferson Land Trust, we’re committed to educating our local students about the natural world and about how to protect our forests and streams forever. You can help by joining us as an education volunteer! We’re currently seeking volunteers to help lead 3rd through 12th grade students who will be taking field trips to Jefferson Land Trust preserves this coming spring. Students from East Jefferson County will be learning about local ecosystems, healthy forests, salmon life cycles, and much more! <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=e6390ddbde&e=c62e014255> Field trips generally run between five to seven hours, and consist of leading classes through nature-based games and activities. No prior teaching experience nor training in natural resources are necessary. All volunteers will receive a one- to two-hour online training from Jefferson Land Trust on how to lead activities (training times are flexible to meet individual needs). All volunteers working with children must pass a background check. If this opportunity sounds like a good fit for you and/or you’re interested in learning more, please reach out to info@saveland.org <mailto:info@saveland.org?subject=Education%20Volunteer%20interest> . Thank you! Request for Proposals: Strategic Planning Consultant Jefferson Land Trust is requesting proposals for consulting and facilitation of a new strategic plan to guide the organization from 2025 to 2029, following our current capital campaign. We envision the strategic planning process as including three phases, but will consider alternatives based on the contractor’s experience: * A retreat workshop with our 12-member board of directors and executive staff to set the plan framework and initial priorities, * A process to engage Jefferson County residents and stakeholders, and * Consulting assistance to the executive staff in fully developing the new plan. Our strategic planning contractor should have extensive experience with nonprofit organizations, particularly those with environmental and land trust missions. Through meditative guidance, we remember how to walk slowly, connect to the earth, and breathe more deeply. By listening to our feet, we unravel from old patterns, taught to us by a fast culture and over-protective, constrictive footwear. For cold season walks, come wearing warm clothing! Once the feet get moving, the circulation provides natural warming to the feet. You are welcome to come in barefoot style footwear. Come with your curiosity and questions. Rain or shine. All feet are welcome! Questions?
