I want to share a couple of highlights from across our campaigns and field work to give you a sense of the overall direction and impact of our work. You make ALL of this possible, day in and day out – your support is essential. Thank you for your commitment to the Sierra Club, Ben <https://image.emails.sierraclub.org/lib/fe9b13727661047e75/m/2/8bc767ab-dd50-45c3-82df-f23ae8b36f76.png> ________________________________ Spotlights Stop Line 5! For years, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and other tribes of the Great Lakes region have been leading an inspiring fight against Canadian oil giant Enbridge’s Line 5 oil and gas pipeline. The 70-year-old pipeline trespasses on their land and threatens water supply for more than 40 million people. This month, the Indigenous Women’s Treaty Alliance joined the Sierra Club in Washington, D.C. to drive home the urgency of shutting down Line 5. The group delivered a petition with more than 9,000 signatures calling on the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a thorough review of, and ultimately reject, Enbridge’s proposal to keep the pipeline alive. Sierra Club’s North Star Chapter in Minnesota also organized a delivery of the petition to the Army Corps' St. Paul District Office. The St. Paul's office is in charge of the proposed permit. Here is my recent op-ed on the need to shut down Line 5 <https://click.emails.sierrac lub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c9668335330677f5b83be534580020a50e68662a3ce830b4b44c20b02cc124be1eda0e5a42f166004b52ef86b708d619b0d> . On the Road Again I am thrilled to continue chapter visits with my recent trip to the Northeast, including joining our friends at Temple Emanu-El in New Jersey <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96 07cd4687e287f10baf585aaa43814b0a8c701ad628d5b660a5b6bd35390f3f8a6e26a2d1680ab36d5a4891437a75319b> to discuss the intersection of environmentalism and social justice, and a stop in Vermont where I met with our chapter <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96346ff52296a2a4a0582fab83a1ea366a3d5e5545c16414764ec744e04aa9c5681dd02a33a487a972024dc22cc7aff176> and sat down with my friend Senator Bernie Sanders <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c963c714ea5deb76e9c81fb8dcdda674182c6f2f687e8d79824eba589b39fdad7b1453499610f6af38ba5b2c5e96 a54a18f> to discuss strides in solar energy and the need for Solar for All. Other News * The EPA’s New Clean Car Standards Are a Big Deal: The Biden-Harris administration’s new car emissions standards <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c960fd62d798a43e8b84ed083b6f835 d3145ebbfe5aadaebb8bd33ab31c521a4b8eadbb25f77e0a73a4e113613c84048c4b> is a historic climate rule we just won that will save lives and money for families. As an owner of an all-electric pickup truck, some of my friends will tell you that I cannot stop talking about how much money I save driving an all electric pickup truck compared to the gas-powered model I owned previously. The new vehicle standards will increase sales of electric vehicles and drastically reduce carbon pollution from gas-powered models, which account for roughly a fifth of the greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Sierra Club fought hard for these strong standards and we’re currently fighting for new standards for heavy-duty trucks to be just as strong. * Exposing the Disinformation Campaign Against Wind and Solar: The cover story for our Spring 2024 print edition of Sierra Magazine <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96bd6d67390d 9d81f73a9e82b3e38af04da761b1bdb36a1bc897e50ad1de324e0f7bdd74003ac5d1220d1c5af5cfd59699> is an investigation into a troubling disinformation campaign by fossil fuel industry front groups. I also published an op-ed calling out how anti-wind activists are making whales a cultural wedge issue <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c960b1c75b13c283e1cd958ff140fced8583718a3 fbb24817ef5555f11e402f9daa04e7a611c34216aed428c5921342d100> . * Sierra Club Research Informing the Field: Two recent reports highlight the role of Sierra Club’s research in major campaigns to protect consumers, investors, and our planet. One new report from our Georgia Chapter in partnership with Dr. Marilyn A. Brown of the Georgia Institute of Technology examines the correlation between energy burdens and race <https://click.emails.sierrac lub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96030e57ff1aada899f639cda5bc6750a640767748dad670f156929e82741accb087503b3e70c24346b2a7dd857d18728f> with an investigation into Black households’ energy burdens in Georgia. Another report from Sierra Club’s Fossil-Free Finance campaign reveals how five major asset managers are putting peoples’ investments and retirement savings at risk by using their money to fuel the climate crisis <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96cd80eb8b17cd4aaa7eae37da301e05055fb3bd52a007818c4897a77afdc257ad9a63ca2eaf7fde879d100e8e00a41000> . * More From Sierra Club’s Chapters: Here are just a few samples of exciting activity – and big wins – from our states: * Washington State has some of the most climate-friendly building codes in the nation. This month we scored a victory in court <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c968023cf9a7d6978 c57e7c9ca5562d292042214b05d0e1832001f3d745f69449e018d50214966e068e06ced49f6f3abd24> when a state judge denied a legal challenge from the gas and homebuilding industries seeking to block their implementation. * Thanks in part to the hard work of Sierra Club's Oregon Chapter <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96bf880f30266acaa5cdb78bb8f908eb763c5d60a8adec37fad6c81515c561126a78cb835f423 87074527d336c0b20c025> , along with Divest Oregon coalition of which it is a part, Oregon's legislature passed a bill directing the state to eliminate its investments in thermal coal. * Just last week, the Superior City Plan Commission voted against local permits <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c96cc18592f3fc3dd239334e6ccabce9eb517fa97b885ead9df7023430ffbc33 a236cfb2354b640460fe1de0dcaee5342c9> for the proposed Nemadji Trail Energy Center <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd92d784d4c9641254296fa6a7a9ccfaadf76e9e69b5222aabdeb74b4c36be8c1f25a3f6 f2a8b9be78b3024898cfcd8e681ff9c63d190> gas plant in Superior, Wisconsin. Efforts to organize against this plant have been ongoing in partnership between the Wisconsin Chapter, North Star Chapter, and the Beyond Coal Campaign. * On February 26, Sierra Club Connecticut and more than 50 climate activists from Connecticut and Louisiana gathered outside The Hartford headquarters <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0c1dd9 2d784d4c962515d52cc406aeae5ab1e7b54846440b06c912dec2aff113077ea15bed76ce6e1274c5c816b2850a8b3bc33e27f5e120> to demand immediate action to end their continued involvement in insuring fossil fuel projects and underwriting liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.
