Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Park Tour April 25, 2024 Park Assessment Survey Name:__________________________________ CHIMACUM PARK (9:00am – 10:15am) Is this a well-kept and welcoming park? Yes No Meet in the main parking lot. Tour Briefing. Walking tour of the park and surrounding county parcels. Board vision for the park: recommendation to preserve surrounding county owned parcels for possible future park uses – possibly using zoning changes or other instruments to achieve this goal; park use and maintenance, picnic shelter replacement, capital improvement planning, kids corridor, trails, and educational uses. 2 good things 2 things to improve with basic maintenance. (landscape, condition, paint, mowing, cleanliness, etc. of the park as you see it right now). What are your top 3 priorities for major upgrades, new amenities, or big repairs (capital improvements)? Ideas for how the park is operated. Suggest one change to improve rules, uses, operation, compliance, or management. Previous Comments: (2023) Good things: Current maintenance is appropriate; Forest well managed; Lots of trees; Accessible to all; Centrally located Two things to improve: Needs maintenance; bathrooms, tables; Develop trails and/or camping; Feels empty; Highway Noise Top 3 Priorities: Informational Kiosk; Land Bank proposal; Conceptual design for new campground on present or expanded footprint; Crosswalk to HJ Carroll; Toilet; Shelter; One Change Idea: More maintenance; More County presence Additional Comments The input you provide in the survey is valuable. It’s used to improve maintenance and operations & included in the PROS plan. IRONDALE COMMUNITY PARK Is this a well-kept and welcoming park? Yes No Meet in the main parking lot. Look at the fencing, buffers, parking, playground toilet, athletic fields, irrigation etc. Board vision of the park, capital improvement planning such as playground replacement, park layout and design improvements such as parking lot and irrigation shed, park maintenance, park goals, neighborhood, perimeter fencing, vandalism prevention, and more. 2 good things 2 things to improve with basic maintenance. (landscape, condition, paint, mowing, cleanliness, etc. of the park as you see it right now). What are your top 3 priorities for major upgrades, new amenities, or big repairs (capital improvements)? Ideas for how the park is operated. Suggest one change to improve rules, uses, operation, compliance, or management. Previous Comments: (2012) List of Goals • A large day use park with athletic fields, playground, parking basketball courts, picnic areas, toilet and kiosk • An important ‘anchor’ for the community • A very important athletic facility used by Chimacum Youth Football, Rec Soccer, Club Soccer, Coed Rec Softball • A community safety net List for Capital Improvements • Improve signage • Resurface basketball court • Vacate right of way to the North where neighbors have encroached on the park • Build a taller backstop and larger fence to prevent so many lost balls Maintenance and Operations • Continue professional maintenance • Seek adopt-a-park group to provide volunteer maintenance • Continue to hold as many games and other events as possible at this park Additional Comments The input you provide in the survey is valuable. It’s used to improve maintenance and operations & included in the PROS plan. IRONDALE BEACH PARK Is this a well-kept and welcoming park? Yes No Walking tour of WDFW and IBP. Partnership with WDFW, lack of professional maintenance, success of volunteerism, park history, park use issues, park goals, trails, capital improvement planning, and more. 2 good things 2 things to improve with basic maintenance. (landscape, condition, paint, mowing, cleanliness, etc. of the park as you see it right now). What are your top 3 priorities for major upgrades, new amenities, or big repairs (capital improvements)? Ideas for how the park is operated. Suggest one change to improve rules, uses, operation, compliance, or management. Previous Comments: (2021) Projects reviewed: leveling ground for smoother mowing, managing the invasive plant species, adding picnic tables, trail maintenance, interpretive signage placement, replacing gate with removable posts, monitoring moored and beached boats, and removal of dead trees. It was confirmed that the creek is clean, safe and tested quarterly. Additional Comments The input you provide in the survey is valuable. Yes No Meet at Portage Beach, directly across from the entrance to the Naval Magazine. Bring your own sack lunch in the picnic shelter. Followed by walking the upland trails to Lagoon Beach and back. Have a look at the picnic shelter, the trails, the Lagoon Beach Parking lot and much more. If there is time, drive to the new bridge to Marrowstone Island to see the new bridge and the new waterway between Marrowstone and Indian Island. If time – debrief the tour in an informal discussion Partnership with WDFW, lack of professional maintenance, success of volunteerism, park use increases, shelter replacement capital improvement planning, partnership with US Navy Magazine, natural values, trails, and more. 2 good things 2 things to improve with basic maintenance. (landscape, condition, paint, mowing, cleanliness, etc. of the park as you see it right now). What are your top 3 priorities for major upgrades, new amenities, or big repairs (capital improvements)? Ideas for how the park is operated. Suggest one change to improve rules, uses, operation, compliance, or management. Previous Comments: (2021) Portage Beach was visited first. Improvements mentioned were moving the entrance for a safer turn, updating or replacing the shelter, expanding parking, clearing areas around Garry oak and apple trees, adding picnic tables, and a possible interpretive sign. The tour continued at Isthmus Beach and the new canal. Sign cleaning is needed in the canal area. Additional Comments The input you provide in the survey is valuable.
