On Wednesday, March 27th, the Washington State Association of Counties’ (WSAC) Board of Directors selected former Pierce County Councilmember Derek Young as Interim Executive Director.
Mr. Young will succeed Eric Johnson, who is stepping down on May 31, 2024.

Judge Dismisses Indigent Defense Lawsuit
On Friday, March 22, 2024, Thurston County Superior Court Judge Allyson Zipp dismissed the Washington State Association of Counties’ (WSAC) lawsuit challenging the state’s public defense
system. Unfortunately, this decision fails to resolve the underlying issue that Washington State is obligated to provide adequate public defense services. It remains necessary for the
state to provide a statutory scheme and framework that ensures this obligation is met.

Legislature Passes Bills That May Help King County’s Budget Crisis
Last fall, King County Executive Dow Constantine issued dire warnings about the county’s budget situation: Without help from the Legislature, it would be forced to shutter all or almost
all of its 10 public health clinics.
The county’s general fund is fueled almost entirely by property taxes, and Olympia strictly limits how much counties can collect in those taxes. With inflation running hot the last several
years, Constantine said, the county’s expenses were outpacing the money it was able to bring in.
