Commissioners,
I want summarize the logic behind my position that any Level 3 chargers installed from this point forward must be equipped with NACS capability.
The attached graphic [ Number of EVs by Make.jpg ] shows the current EV population of Washington State. Source: https://data.wa.gov/Transportation/
Beginning with the 2025 model year (this Fall), all new EVs sold in the US will be equipped with NACS connectors. Therefore, the entire universe of EVs that will ever need to use either
CCS or CHAdeMO connectors is reflected in the bars to the right of the 80K Tesla bar in that chart (plus those few cars that will be imported from other countries still using CCS).
Owners of CCS and CHAdeMO-equipped cars will soon realize that they will have to buy an adapter to use the NACS standard so they can access what will be a very rapidly growing number
of NACS charging stations. Adapters currently cost ~$230 but will rapidly drop to < $100 within the next year; some manufacturers are already providing adapters for free (e.g. Ford
for their 2023 F150 Lightning pickups and Mustang Mach-Es).
Jefferson County currently has no publicly accessible Level 3 chargers; the county should do everything possible to ensure that the very few new chargers to be installed over the will
have the correct national standard connector, NACS.
Thank you,
Tom Thiersch
