Port Townsend is kind of a one-in-a-million community — I don’t know if I’ll find the kind of willingness to make change in other places. It makes me really grateful to have grown up here.” Tallulah was announced as the winner during the Land Trust’s virtual Conservation Breakfast <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=e6759e96ca&e=c62e014255> on March 14. Jefferson Land Trust’s Board President Brian Rogers presented her with the award, and surprised her with the news that an anonymous community member was so inspired by her leadership that they matched the award’s $500 prize with an additional $500 gift to support Tallulah in her goals. Guided by Land Trust staff and AmeriCorps crew members as well as experts from the community, the students gained hands-on education about the importance of thoughtful management activities for forest and stream health, and undertook a variety of key restoration projects across several of our nature preserves. One student, Rose, served as "Communications Officer" for the week and took the photographs above. Thank you to Rose and to all the Youth Corps interns for all their great work out on the land! Announcing Jefferson Land Trust’s Equity and Access Fund Since its inception in 1989, Jefferson Land Trust has relied on the support of hundreds of volunteers to help make our community conservation work possible. We recognize that our work is made stronger, more resilient, and more relevant through the service of volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds who bring a diversity of perspectives and lived experiences, and reflect the many communities that our work affects. In late 2023, Jefferson Land Trust established an Equity and Access Fund to help remove financial barriers to volunteer participation; to value the contributions of those who share their perspective as a member of a marginalized community to guide the Land Trust’s decision making; and to honor those who share their cultural traditions and expertise at our events. Specifically, the Fund offers: * Reimbursement for transportation and dependent care costs to any Land Trust volunteer who requests it. * Stipends to members of marginalized groups who are part of boards, committees, or task forces and are volunteering to provide perspective on their lived experience, specifically to guide decision making. * Honoraria for community members who are invited to share their cultural traditions and/or expertise at Land Trust events. We hope that the Equity and Access Fund will allow even more people to become part of the Jefferson Land Trust community. If you are someone or know someone who would benefit from using the Equity and Access Fund, please visit the new Equity and Access Fund website page <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=a2e9e628fa&e=c62e014255> to learn more and/or fill out the eligibility request form. And help us spread the word! We’d like to thank the James D. Scheinfeld Family Foundation for providing initial support for this initiative. Community Request: Group Vehicle for Land Trust Tours and Travel <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=0940f4265e&e=c62e014255> The Land Trust is seeking a vehicle to help us reliably and safely transport groups of Land Trust staff members, volunteers, partners, and others to sites like Chimacum Ridge Community Forest. After many years of relying on staff members’ personal vehicles, the time has come to secure a vehicle that our organization will use frequently for site tours, events, and more. The ideal vehicle can seat five people or more, like a van, minivan, or large SUV. The vehicle must be able to handle unpaved roads, so will need high clearance. Alternatively, if you own such a vehicle, have some free time, and would be interested in volunteering your vehicle and/or your driving services to the Land Trust, we’re interested in hearing from you! If you’re interested in donating your vehicle or volunteering its use to the Land Trust, or if you know of an available vehicle for sale that might fit our needs, please reach out to info@saveland.org <mailto:info@saveland.org> . Thank you! Above right: Stewardship Coordinator Marlowe Moser and Director of Stewardship and Resilience Erik Kingfisher. She writes, “Along with the resident Anna's Hummingbirds and recently arrived Rufous Hummingbirds at my feeders, a different one appeared. Wondering if it could possibly be a hybrid, I shared these photos with some of my naturalist colleagues/friends, including Jackie Canterbury. Through meditative guidance, we remember how to walk slowly, connect to the earth, and breathe more deeply. By listening to our feet, we unravel from old patterns, taught to us by a fast culture and over-protective, constrictive footwear. For cold season walks, come wearing warm clothing! Once the feet get moving, the circulation provides natural warming to the feet. You are welcome to come in barefoot style footwear. Come with your curiosity and questions. Rain or shine. All feet are welcome! To register, email Emmy Joy at emmy.joy@aol.com >> <mailto:emmy.joy@aol.com> ________________________________ Washington Native Plant Society Olympic Chapter Presents: Fort Townsend State Park Walk Friday, May 24, 9:30 am, Old Fort Townsend State Park Following a botany walk, the group will visit the globally imperiled natural forest area, then take a two to three mile hike searching for and inventorying the diversity and abundance of the heterotrophic (i.e.parasitic and mycoheterotrophic) vascular plants found in the park. As walk leader Ann Weinmann is particularly fond of this park, expect a 15-minute introduction to the botanical features that establish the park as a unique example of Washington State’s native flora. To sign up, email Ann Weinmann at aweinmann@cablespeed.com <mailto:aweinmann@cablespeed.com> or call her at 360.379.0986. ________________________________ Wild Church Port Townsend Saturday, May 25, 10:00 - 11:30 am, Fort Townsend State Park Every 4th Saturday of the month, join guide Katy Taylor to gather in and with creation, with other folks, and with the other beings on this earth.
