This expansion not only strengthens ties with Indigenous connections through Tribal co-stewardship for these cherished lands but also enhances biodiversity by safeguarding critical habitats for species like the majestic condor, tule elk, and mountain lions, aiding their adaptation to climate change. Additionally, extending the monument boosts outdoor recreation in Northern California, enriching activities like hiking, picnicking, and wildlife watching. This increase in accessible natural spaces draws more visitors, further enriching our regional heritage and deepening the community's connection with the natural world. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=3609c1329cd4dccbd28898c59f10af77e5010a07e6b1c3b2d0e4ab9b79fc4b1a2a43bcc600d0436fa6d0cd0b2e3625334088c0c06e69eb649bf6c9ec6533bff7> Photo by Kerri Pang | 10/14/2023 Latino Heritage Month outing event in Los Angeles Celebrating the wins of the coalition and calling on the Biden Administration to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Down south, expanding the San Gabriel Mountains Monument creates more access to nature for local communities in the Los Angeles region, especially Latino and low-income communities who have historically had limited access to green spaces. This change will ensure more Angelenos can experience the physical and mental benefits of accessing nature. The San Gabriels expansion also protects key habitats and travel routes for local wildlife, including black bears and mountain lions. It also secures crucial water sources that a third of the county relies on for drinking water, benefiting both our environment and our communities. The expansion of our national monuments benefits everyone! Sending thank you messages to the Biden administration helps us build momentum that will lead to more successes like this! Send your thanks now! <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=3609c1329cd4dccb230b704d0f7fd2f05217a8f938c8189be10230560149d2394f350ec1a38e0a89f4e7eebdc146c4061ce75e35247c840330642c3ab1a389a2> Your support leads to tangible victories. When we unite our voices, we affect change not only in California but nationwide. Let's use this win as a springboard to secure further protections for our cherished landscapes and historic sites. Many areas across the country, like the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument near Joshua Tree National Park in California or the site of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot in Illinois, would benefit significantly from national monument status. Unlike national parks, which require Congressional designation, the President can also establish and expand monuments under the 1906 Antiquities Act. That's why we need your help to urge President Biden to continue creating National Monuments throughout this term. Every comment, call, and conversation makes a difference. Let's not stop here -- there's so much more we can accomplish together! Thank you for all that you do. Your passion and persistence drive this movement forward. Let's continue to celebrate each success and strive for even greater achievements.
