Here is a recent example: Blood cancer physician Ajay Gopal, MD, FACP, at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine, is a key collaborator on a team developing a new approach to boost participation in medical research, especially for underserved populations. Currently, less than 10% of cancer patients participate in clinical trials, with research showing structural and clinical barriers as the biggest impediments. Dr. Gopal is among the experts working closely with Fred Hutch researcher Jason Mendoza, MD, MPH, on the new GUIDE project (Guiding participation toward Understanding, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity for Cancer Clinical Trials). Together, they will test a program to address health-related social needs and the financial burden of patients who participate in cancer clinical trials. Supporting inclusive clinical trial participation, particularly among individuals of color, will help ensure that new treatments that emerge from the research are broadly applicable to all the patients they are meant to benefit.
