WHEREAS, nearly 3.8 million registered nurses in the United States comprise our nation s
largest health care profession; and.
WHEREAS, the registered nursing profession is a bedrock supporting health in Jefferson
County through the Jefferson County Public Health Department. Jefferson Healthcare Hospital, local
medical providers, and long-term care facilities; and,
WHEREAS, Jefferson County Public Health nurses are the first line of disease prevention
and epidemiology working with local medical providers to assure testing and treatments for citizens
with communicable diseases; and,
WHEREAS, throughout history, the nursing profession has played a major role in responding
to crises and provided care and innovation that has saved lives and reduced suffering; and,
WHEREAS, from providing direct care to affected, hospitalized patients to leading full-scale
public health operations,nurses are front and center working around the clock to protect the health
and well-being of patients and the public at large; and,
WHEREAS, every year on May 6 we celebrate National Nurses Day; and,
WHEREAS, May 12, 2024 marks the 204 birthday of Florence Nightingale. the founder of
modem nursing;
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Jefferson County Commissioners
do hereby proclaim May 6-12, 2024 as:
NURSES WEEK
in Jefferson County. We ask all residents of this community to join us in honoring our
HEALTHCARE HEROES, the registered nurses who care for the public and in showing
our appreciation not just during this week but at every opportunity throughout the year.

STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Every year May 6-12, is Nurses Week. The Commissioners are asked to approve a proclamation and
ask all residents of this community to join us in honoring our HEALTHCARE HEROES, the
registered nurses who care for the public. We welcome the opportunity to show our appreciation not
duringthis week, but at everyopportunity throughout the year.

There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming the Week of May 6-12, 2024 as Nurses Week.
