April is National Minority Health Month!
“He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything.” -Thomas Carlyle
Across the United States, BIPOC individuals experience adverse health outcomes at a higher rate. These can include lower life expectancy, and higher rates of obesity, asthma, heart disease,
cancer, and preterm birth. Improving health equity is one way to reduce these adverse health outcomes and improve our community’s overall mental and physical well-being. How can we
as a coalition improve health equity?
1. Coalition Member Education: The best way to fight inequity is to learn about implicit and explicit biases, practice self-reflection, and to educate yourself on practices that improve
equity and inclusivity in your workplace or community. Sign up for a training with a focus on equitable and anti-racist practices (such as the ones listed at the bottom of our newsletters),
read a book like Invisible Child <https://google.us22.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3961206950e6df0e4b4689479&id=7674de2033&e=8b366862f4> by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Andrea Elliott,
or watch one of the many high quality videos available on Youtube like this <https://google.us22.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3961206950e6df0e4b4689479&id=13223dc98c&e=8b366862f4>
.
2. Community Outreach Efforts: One of the strengths of coalition work is our ability to invite a wide variety of community members to our table, and to collaborate with individuals and
organizations who may not otherwise have a voice in public health. Do you see a group in our community who is not being served or has difficulty accessing community opportunities? Tell
the coalition about it, and we can collectively strategize how we can welcome or support this group in the work we do!
3. Accessible Services and Programs: We can improve our outreach and programming efforts by ensuring our advertising and materials meet the needs of everyone in our community. Some ways
to do this are to check that our materials are written in clear and easily accessible language and have formatting that is friendly to those with color blindness or visual impairments.
We can also improve equity by lowering barriers to accessing programs and education, such as offering programs after typical working hours, offering gas card incentives, making sure
program locations are easily accessible by public transit, and implementing programs virtually. Let us know in an email or coalition meeting if you notice that our advertising, materials,
or programs have an aspect that may make them difficult to access!
