To Whom It May Concern:
I am a resident of Jefferson County in Gardiner, Washington. I am writing to ask what the Jefferson
County’s Public Health Board’s position is on the proposed concrete batching plant about a mile
from my house.
Batching plants are known to be a major source of air pollution due to the emission of particulate
matter, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. These facilities consume large amounts of
water and generate waste that can make significant contributions to water pollution. (There is the
additional noise pollution generated by these facilities.)
Another contributing factor is the pollution caused by idling trucks waiting to be loaded and the
resulting traffic increase on our narrow roads.
As someone already fighting cancer, I do not need to be breathing or drinking carcinogenic
compounds at home.
Doesn’t everyone in Jefferson County have the right to clean air and water? To live in a quiet rural
area? These environmentally hazardous businesses have no place near homes.
What is the Board’s position on this?
Thank you,
Jan Lewis, Ph.D.
