HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024_05_15 AUlner_Gardiner Blast PlantFrom:Adelle Ulner To:Board of Health Subject:Proposed Concrete Blast Plant in Gardiner community Date:Wednesday, May 15, 2024 5:36:14 PM ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed concrete blast plant to be located at the Old Gardiner Gravel Pit. Although I can appreciate it may be somewhat more economical to have a closer source of concrete for the fish barrier work, I am more concerned about potentially more costly health risks, noise and water contamination, and increased large truck traffic. Personally, after returning from just three months in the Gulf War and the conditions there, I was diagnosed with asthma which required daily and as needed medication. I still occasionally wheeze but no longer require routine medication. I spend several hours almost every day working outside and I don't want anything in my "backyard" that could compromise my lung function. I'm sure you are aware our water supply is very close to the proposed plant. Once damage is done, fines cannot restore ones health. I also understand there is a risk of fire and we are in a wooded area during a drought. I grew up in Rochester, WA, joined the Navy, and for most of my adult life lived in Boulder Creek, CA where we had built a house. That is until August 2020 when our neighborhood was part of the CZU wildfire. It was devastating. But that is how I now live in and love this quiet, beautiful, friendly, Gardiner, WA. Opening a concrete blast plant does not seem congruent in my reading of the Gardiner Community Development Plan. I believe that most of your Gardiner constituents still "oppose more industrial uses in the area" (pg. 15). I have already seen and heard large trucks on Gardiner Beach Rd. since the fish barrier work began. I can only imagine what it might be like if the plant proposal is approved. It would definitely affect the enjoyment of our home. Please do whatever you can to keep a Gardiner concrete blast plant from happening. Sincerely, Adelle Ulner 1452 Gardiner Beach Rd.
