I didn’t understand it, she should be tired by then. If I questioned my mom about it, she would say, “it makes me feel good.” This year, the Women’s Justice Circle is starting a journey toward food equity. In collaboration with the Swan Farm Community Pea Patch, this group of women are planting a community garden together. LeeAnn McMillen, a new board member, has been a great support as we are learning how to start growing our own vegetables! If you have used, volunteered for, or worked at the Food Bank, you have witnessed a lack of participation from the immigrant community, mainly from Hispanic people. JCIRA hopes that this garden brings not just food to these family’s tables, but also, a sense of belonging as we work the land, have access to it and its gifts. Voter registration forms in both English and Spanish now available at the JCIRA Multicultural Center <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/8cc5ff5e-1966-efa1-605a-6f78570f3b06.jpg> In April, JCIRA hosted an immigration clinic in partnership with Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center. Our legal volunteers did eleven free legal consultations, and there are more clinics planned, including one in July. <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/eb369d7b-a8a0-3337-0ab1-b446897e605c.png> JCIRA Meets with Jefferson Healthcare on Immigrant Issues On April 12, JCIRA met with Human Resource staff from Jefferson Healthcare (JHC) to discuss how to better share information on what jobs are available at JHC for immigrants and others. Ideas were shared, including that JCIRA could host a Job Board at the Center. Other topics discussed were increasing the clarity of job titles, streamlining the job application process, and increasing job training opportunities with educational institutions. Attendees agreed that the discussion was helpful and applicable to the general public applying for jobs as well as immigrants. JCIRA and the Port Townsend School District In a recent article in the Port Townsend Leader, PT School District Superintendent Dr. Linda Rosenbury was interviewed on the current state of the schools. She noted the partnership with JCIRA, who has helped translate important information into Spanish. JCIRA has also presented at the District's Annual Equity Conference to raise awareness about language access policies. Dr. Rosenbury identified the newly appointed community liaison, Kai Wallin, who is supporting the schools by implementing their Language Access Plan to provide interpretation and translation for families. Le Guin, The Dispossessed Drawing from over twenty years of activism on local and national levels, this striking book offers an organizer’s perspective on the intersections of immigrant rights, racial justice, and prison abolition. Legislative Wins for the Immigrant Community This past legislative session, JCIRA teamed up with the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN), other immigrant rights organizations, and the strong and resilient communities that continue to demand immigrant rights legislation. Many of you contacted your legislators urging them to pass unemployment for undocumented workers, healthcare for all, and support for the many recently arrived immigrants. And we wanted to thank you again for stepping up for immigrant justice and to share with you the two big wins that will provide support immigrants deserve. The 2024 budget provides critical funding for two of WAISN’s priority campaigns: the Health Equity for Immigrants campaign (HEIC) to provide equal access to healthcare for all Washingtonians regardless of immigration status, and the Newly Arrived Migrants campaign to support the needs of immigrants recently arrived to Washington state. HEIC includes $28.4 million for health access to low-income immigrant community members through expanded funding for a Medicaid-like program. An additional $33.7 million was designated to support newly arriving migrants in Washington. Even with this funding, not all eligible community members will be able to receive coverage through the Medicaid-like program, and for middle-income families, without federal subsidies, health insurance is still out of reach. There is still work to be done. JCIRA is seeking volunteers to help drive and/or accompany immigrants to official appointments, mostly in the Seattle area. No specific experience or knowledge is needed, some Spanish is helpful.
