SUBJECT: Briefing: Proposed Sponsorship Program for Qualifying Activities
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: On May 16, 2024 Jefferson County received a letter from East
Jefferson Little League (EJLL) announcing that they had been selected to host the major league
baseball tournament for the Washington District 2 Little League Conference for 2024. The
conference, which serves youth from Kitsap, Pierce, Mason, Jefferson and Clallam counties will
take place beginning June 29, 2024 and will last several days. EJLL is asking the County for in-
kind support such as brush cutting and providing signage and traffic cones. In addition, they are
asking for a direct financial contribution of$2,500.
ANALYSIS: Jefferson County is a strong supporter of youth athletics as evidenced by our robust
recreation program. This conference further supports youth in our county and our neighboring
counties by providing healthy team and character-building activity. Furthermore, it helps build
community as people can gather and watch these youth compete on the ball field.
In addition, this event will attract families from our neighboring counties that will support the local
economy by patronizing local establishments such as restaurants, hotels and shops.
In sum, staff believes this is an event that is worthy of the County's support, either through in-kind
contributions and through direct financial support.
FISCAL IMPACT: None.
RECOMMENDATION: Given that Public Works has indicated that they don't have the capacity
to provide in-kind support staff recommends that the Board approve the $2,500 in direct financial
support and direct staff to develop a formal sponsorship program funded annually with $10,000 in
General Fund resources.
