Increased travel times on North Lake Cushman Road
OLYMPIA, Wash., June 1, 2024 — Beginning Monday, June 3, travelers on North Lake Cushman Road (State Route 119 and Forest Service Road 24) should plan for increased travel times due
timber harvest operations in the Big Stewardship area near Lake Cushman on the Olympic National Forest.
Travelers should anticipate encountering traffic control measures on North Lake Cushman Road between the junction of State Route 119 and Forest Service Road 24 until a quarter mile past
the entrance to North Mount Church Drive.
Traffic signs and road flaggers will be used to manage traffic along sections of Lake Cushman Road Monday through Friday during roadside felling operations, and times of decreased road
visibility. Operations will be suspended during the weekends and holidays. Work is expected to be completed in October 2024.
The Big Creek Campground will remain open during logging operations, but campers should expect noise when logging occurs in sections near the campground from sunrise to sunset.
The Big Creek Campground Trail #827 and Big Creek Upper Loop Trail #827.1 will temporarily close when logging operations occur near sections of the trail with specific closure dates
to be announced on our website, social media, and posted in Big Creek Campground.
On the Olympic National Forest, commercial thinning is used to diversify forest structure and composition as well as produce valuable timber. This increases habitat and forage for wildlife,
enhances visual quality, and provides economic opportunities for local businesses. Thinning is one of many forest management tools employed to meet ecological, social, and economic
objectives.
