For people like Dana Boggess and Bill Niwa, it’s a reminder of life beyond cancer. For those of us who’ve lost loved ones to cancer, it’s a time to reflect. For all of us, it’s a reminder to think about and recognize the invaluable role that caregivers play in patients’ and survivors’ experiences. Dana was in the midst of a job transition when she and her partner, Bill, found out that he had multiple myeloma, a cancer related to bone marrow. In the fall of 2017, as they prepared for Bill to receive a blood stem cell transplant at Fred Hutch — where the treatment was also first pioneered — Dana adjusted her work and other obligations so it would be possible to take him to weekly and sometimes daily clinic appointments and help him at home. She admits the experience was often more than challenging, but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. When asked to offer advice for new caregivers, Dana suggests leaning into your own strengths, and staying organized by taking lots of notes and focusing on what you can control to help your loved one. To assist the caregivers of patients going through cancer treatments, Fred Hutch offers a variety of resources including a downloadable Caregiver Guide, available here <https://secure.fredhutch.org/s ite/R?i=ztQlgxjQrzAIAljBVCfsRFM9w2dGZEKMjS2Fdv51FkjOxsgaW7-7TA> . Our researchers and clinicians are also working hard to deliver breakthrough treatments and new cures for people facing cancer and other life-changing diseases. Thanks to a matching gift from an anonymous friend, your gift could be doubled between now and June 30 <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=Zvl5uGJ1gg-YbvAn8p9d0LkHpvl6CVc3hPVeuguYg8L7T6e75yr9Tw> , up to $100,000.
