A new agreement between Alaska’s capital city and major cruise lines
seeks to cap the daily number of cruise ship passengers arriving in
Juneau starting in 2026
Cruise passengers numbers ramped up rapidly after two
pandemic-stunted years, hitting a record of more than 1.6
million passengers in Juneau last year. That’s caused tension
between businesses that rely on tourism and residents who are
fed up with increased traffic, busy trails and the hum of
helicopters ferrying visitors to glaciers.
A proposed local ballot initiative that would institute “ship free
Saturdays,” with no cruise ships with a capacity of at least 250
passengers allowed to stop in Juneau on Saturdays or on July 4.

According to surveys conducted from January 2023 to February
2024 by market-research giant Nielsen, 3.8 million adults in the
Seattle market area —that’s 85% of the nearly 4.5 million adult
population —have taken at least one overnight-or-longer trip in
the past 12 months.
And the new top destination for Seattle-area visitors?
The Washington coast ranked No. 1 in the latest
Nielsen data, attracting a little over 1 million
vacationers from the Seattle area. That represents an
increase of about 169,000, or 19%.

Fort Worden Hospitality (FWH) at the Nora Porter
Commons at Fort Worden State Park will be the
hub for visitor information, according to a city
press release.
According to the same press release, the Port
Townsend Mainstreet Program and Key City
Public Theatre will also play roles in providing
visitor services.
The Port Townsend Main Street Program, for its
part, will deploy a “mobile greeter program,”
which involves positioning an electric bike cart
and staffer who can answer questions at key
downtown locations. The staffer and cart will be
used on weekends through September.
