Major Issues of the Week
This weekend, we had two service disruptions due to vessel mechanical issues, unfortunately, both impacting island communities.
On Saturday, the Kitsap, one of the two boats operating on the Fauntleroy/Southworth/Vashon route was out of service from late Friday night until 12.45 Saturday afternoon, placing the
route on one-boat operations. The vessel’s engine room crew and repair staff from our Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility did a great job repairing the vessel, but it was a tough morning
with a single vessel for customers on a route already downsized from three boats to two.
On Saturday night, the Yakima, one of the three boats operating on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route (as well as the Interisland boat, the fourth assigned to the San Juan Islands),
went out of service due to a mechanical issue. While it was repaired and resumed operations Sunday night, having only two boats on a sunny June Sunday, was frustrating for visitors
to and residents of San Juan County.
Like last weekend, we had messaging challenges which we are working hard to address. This is frustrating for our customers and our staff, and we’re committed to better communicating
adjustments when there is a boat out of service.
Service Reliability*
Importantly, last week we missed no trips due to crewing.
For the week of June 3-9, systemwide service reliability was 97.5%. Last week we cancelled 83 of 2793 scheduled sailings, of which 14 were replaced, so 70 actual missed trips. Of the
cancellations, 54% were due to a vessel being out for repairs (the Yakima and Kitsap mentioned above), 22% for schedule resets (when a boat is so far behind schedule, we cancel a sailing
to get it back on schedule, providing predictability for customers), and 24% for low tides.
*For WSF, “reliability” refers to a scheduled sailing taking places, not on-time-performance. We understand for the public a significantly late sailing isn’t “reliable,” but we also
share on-time-performance data <https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/wsferries/viz/WSF-Public/Index> for transparency on both metrics.
Vessel Availability
Every route is operating at our 15-vessel current service level, with some routes downsized by capacity from their normal late spring levels.
New Vessels and Jumbo Mark II Conversions
New Vessels – We have released the first part of an Invitation For Bid, allowing us to begin prequalifying shipyards, moving to selecting a shipyard(s) by the end of the year. We are
still scheduled to deliver two boats in 2028.
Hybrid Conversions – Work continues on the Wenatchee, the first Jumbo Mark II vessel undergoing its long-planned midlife propulsion upgrade. We will update you on significant project
milestones.
Major Events
Sunday begins our 2024 summer sailing season, which runs through Sept. 21. Here are highlights:
* FVS Triangle:
* The unscheduled 3rd boat (“ghost boat”) is anticipated to return, pending final confirmation of vessel and crew availability. The exact details of operation for the 3rd vessel are
being finalized and will be shared when available.
* On Fridays only, an additional Vashon-Fauntleroy-Vashon trip has been added midday to the 2-boat Alternate Schedule. After arriving at Vashon Island following the 11:15am Southworth
departure, the #2 vessel will depart Vashon at 11:40am and Fauntleroy at 12:10pm, before resuming the regular afternoon schedule with the 12:35pm sailing from Vashon to Southworth.
On Mondays-Thursdays there is no change to the schedule, and the #2 vessel will tie-up midday for deck crew change.
* Port Townsend-Coupeville:
* The route will operate a regular schedule on Thursday, July 4, meaning the 10:00pm Port Townsend and 10:40pm Coupeville sailings will not operate on that day.
* We are working to have a second vessel and crewing available for additional service for September’s Wooden Boat Festival.
* Anacortes-San Juan Islands:
* The state legislature appropriated additional funds to extend the #3’s Thursdays-Mondays 6:45pm Lopez-only sailing out to Orcas Island. Due to the extra time required to sail to Orcas
Island and back, the #3’s following trip from Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas and back is moved 50 minutes later to depart Anacortes at 9:50pm on Thu-Mon. However, on Tuesday and
Wednesday, when the 6:45pm trip does not operate to accommodate vessel fueling, the sailing time remains at 9:00pm.
* To preserve Saturday afternoon Interisland service its vessel’s Friday evening return from Anacortes has dropped its Orcas stop, to keep its crews from timing out and not being available
for service the next day.
* Edmonds-Kingston:
* Beginning in mid-July, the route is scheduled to be served by the two larger vessels usually assigned to the route in summer.
WSF Public Meetings
We are planning two virtual public meetings, led by WSF Assistant Secretary Steve Nevey, to share the latest updates about crewing, hybrid-electric vessels, and progress on service restoration.
The meetings will give riders and community members the opportunity to ask questions of Steve, WSF Deputy Secretary Nicole McIntosh, and a panel of WSF directors. So far, 160 people
have registered for the two meetings.
