Many of today’s best cancer treatments target specific molecular changes in cancer cells. But they aren’t equally effective for all patients, in part because the samples available for studies done to develop them don’t represent the full range of patients — especially those of African ancestry. Fred Hutch researcher Gavin Ha, PhD, is searching for new targets that can bring targeted therapies to a wider population of people with prostate cancer. By applying new computer algorithms to the analysis of ancestry markers and DNA alterations across the entire genome of over 20,000 diverse prostate tumor samples, Dr. Ha’s team aims to unravel the patterns that contribute to disparities in survival.
