A Family Reunited…
JCIRA staff and volunteers have been working to reunite a local mother with her two young children since last fall. They fled domestic and cartel violence in Mexico, but the two young
children were trapped on the border, unable to cross and be with their mother.
Through countless hours of advocacy, and with the support of some amazing lawyers and advocates across the country, we were able to see this family happily reunited recently. Immigration
stories like this one often do not have a happy ending. With extremely limited pathways to gain legal status, and increasingly strict policies on the border, many families have no way
to reunite.
To give you an idea of the amount of advocacy that went into reuniting this one family, we’d like to share a little bit about our work and all the partners that helped make it possible
for one mother to be with her children again.
This mother contacted the JCIRA Multicultural Center for help. We spent months trying to find her legal representation. There are no immigration lawyers on the Olympic Peninsula, an
issue JCIRA is currently working to improve. After many unreturned phone calls in search of legal aide, we finally reached out to our senators and congressperson, and found assistance
with Derek Kilmer’s Constituent Services staff. This response led to a connection to the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca8
3&id=d0a3f69989&e=e9fe4694e3> in Tacoma, and we found a wonderful lawyer who was willing to take this case, working in partnership with JCIRA staff. Since the children were stuck on
the US-Mexico border, JCIRA staff also made connections with the expert legal team at Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=d0
3374151b&e=e9fe4694e3> in San Diego/Tijuana and with the nonprofit Al Otro Lado <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=43f14454ca&e=e9fe4694e3>
, which provided essential accompaniment on the Tijuana border. It truly took a village to make this reunification possible.

Una familia reunida...
El personal y los voluntarios de JCIRA llevan trabajando para reunir a una madre local con sus dos hijos pequeños desde el pasado otoño. Huyeron de la violencia doméstica y de los cárteles
en México, pero los dos niños pequeños quedaron atrapados en la frontera, sin poder cruzar y estar con su madre.
A través de innumerables horas de defensa, y con el apoyo de algunos abogados y defensores increíbles en Washington y en la frontera entre EE.UU. y México, pudimos ver a esta familia
felizmente reunida recientemente. Las historias de inmigración como ésta no siempre tienen un final feliz. Con vías extremadamente limitadas para obtener un estatus legal, y políticas
cada vez más estrictas en la frontera, muchas familias no tienen forma de reunirse.
Para que se hagan una idea de la cantidad de trabajo de abogacía que se realizó para reunir a esta única familia, nos gustaría compartir un poco sobre nuestro trabajo y todos los socios
que ayudaron a hacer posible que una madre volviera a estar con sus hijos.
Esta madre se puso en contacto con el Centro Multicultural JCIRA para pedir ayuda. Pasamos meses intentando encontrarle representación legal. No hay abogados de inmigración en la Península
Olímpica, un problema que JCIRA está trabajando actualmente para mejorar. Tras muchas llamadas telefónicas sin respuesta en busca de ayuda legal, finalmente nos pusimos en contacto
con nuestros senadores y congresista, y encontramos ayuda en el personal de Servicios Constituyentes de Derek Kilmer. Esta respuesta nos condujo a una conexión con el Proyecto de Derechos
de los Inmigrantes del Noroeste <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=d8ef6569bb&e=e9fe4694e3> en Tacoma, y encontramos un maravilloso abogado
que estaba dispuesto a llevar este caso, trabajando en colaboración con el personal de JCIRA. Como los niños estaban atrapados en la frontera entre EE.UU. y México, el personal de JCIRA

que proporcionó un acompañamiento esencial en la frontera de Tijuana. Verdaderamente se necesitó una aldea para hacer posible esta reunificación.
