SUBJECT: WORKSHOP re: Salmon Sustainability and Coast Salmon
Partnership's Roles and Priorities
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Public Health requests time for a presentation by Coast Salmon Partnership, executive director Dr.Mara
Zimmerman on salmon sustainability and the organization's roles and priorities.
ANALYSIS:
The Coast Salmon Partnership(CSP) is the regional salmon recovery organization for Washington's
Pacific coast, which includes all watersheds draining to the Pacific Ocean from Cape Flattery to Cape
Disappointment.Protection and restoration of salmon habitat, the focus of their work, is critical to
sustaining salmon populations and the communities that depend on them. CSP serves a network of
restoration partners who represent Tribes, state agencies, watershed groups, local governments, and
conservation organizations that implement habitat protection and restoration from start to finish.
Washington State salmon recovery is collaborative and multi jurisdictional. County-directed regulations,
such as critical area ordinances, play an important role in the protection of salmon habitat. Also important
are voluntary programs to restore salmon habitat, and CSP works with the four coastal watershed groups,
or lead entities, who develop and rank salmon restoration projects for public funding.
Dr.Zimmerman will give an overview of the organization, address common questions about salmon
recovery, and highlight current on-the-ground projects on the county's West End. She will discuss
Jefferson Courity's current contributions to this work as well as the potential for future collaborative work
on topics suchias climate resiliency and additional ESA listings.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The costs for approving this workshop are negligible.
